Who is Scarlxrd?
Scarlxrd, pronounced as “scarlord,” is a British “YouTuber”-turned-rapper, best known for his unusual musical compositions. Formerly known as “MazziMaz,” Scarlxrd mixes trap music with heavy metal to form his songs. He started his singing career as the lead vocalist of a metal band named ‘Myth City.’ His single ‘Heart Attack’ turned around his rap career when its music video hit more than 40 million “views.” As a “YouTuber,” he started his career by publishing comedy vlogs. He has also collaborated with fellow “YouTubers” Casper Lee and Sam Pepper in the past. After he founded ‘Myth City’ in 2014, Scarlxrd left his ‘YouTube’ career as “Mazzi Maz” behind. He later described his ‘YouTube’ career as “soul-destroying.” His fans quickly subscribed to his band and responded well to his vocals. The band released their first self-titled EP in 2015. As a solo artist, he released a music video named ‘Girlfriend’ in 2016. The same year, he released two albums, namely, ‘スカー藩主’ (Japanese for his self-titled album) and ‘Rxse’. Childhood & Early Life
Scarlxrd was born Marius Listhrop, on June 19, 1994, in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. He grew up with a younger sister named Claire.
As a child, he practiced kickboxing. He studied media production in college, before taking up music as a career path.
Growing up, he looked up to Eminem, Nelly, and Missy Elliot as his musical influences. He even stated later that he had started his own band because he was inspired by ‘Linkin’ Park’ and ‘Rage Against the Machine.’
Early Career
Marius started his ‘YouTube’ channel, ‘TheMazziMaz,’ in April 2012. He was merely a teenager back then.
He created vlogs in his bedroom and uploaded them on his channel. His videos were mostly created for the purpose of comedy.
His first video was titled ‘Ask Maz.’ His ‘Epic Fries Challenge’ video is one of the most-viewed videos from his first channel.
He also collaborated with fellow “YouTubers” Jake Boys, Sam Pepper, and Casper Lee to promote his channel. He was known as the “super-smiley YouTuber” by his fans.
From 2013 to 2014, he went on a comedy–music tour around the world. He called it the ‘WDGAF Tour.’
Career
In 2014, he decided to change his image and find a new career. He founded ‘Myth City,’ a nu metal/rap rock band and decided to perform as the band’s lead vocalist.
He invited his fans to join his band’s ‘YouTube’ channel and listen to their music, which was a mix of rap and hard metal. He describes his music as “trap metal.”
He was described as a “rap metal overlord” by British music website ‘NME.’ Although the band’s music received mixed reviews, Marius’s fans loved his vocal style.
His voice hit the right notes with his fans. ‘Myth City’ released their first EP on February 28, 2015.
Soon after joining the band, he changed his name from “Maz” to “Scarlxrd.” He is also known as “Young Scar.”
He released his single ‘Girlfriend’ in 2016 as “Scarlxrd,” his new, re-branded moniker. He rapped over a hip-hop track in the music video.
He released his self-titled album, ‘スカー藩主,’ in October 2016. In December 2016, he released his second album, ‘Rxse.’
He released three albums, ‘Cabin Fever,’ ‘Chaxsthexry,’ and ‘Lxrdszn,’ in 2017. He has been wearing his signature mask in his music videos since April 2017.
The reason behind wearing the mask was that he wanted to break away from his former “YouTuber” image. His mask is inspired by Japanese manga ‘Tokyo Ghoul.’
He released the music video for ‘Chain$aw’ in May 2017. He released the music video for ‘King, Scar’ a week later.
2017 was also a career-defining year for him, as the year saw him release the music video of his popular single ‘Heart Attack.’ The video was released on June 23 that year and gained overnight success.
The video garnered more than 40 million “views” and has been his most popular video to date. He released his fifth album, ‘Lxrdszn,’ in September that year.
He released his sixth studio album, ‘Dxxm,’ in May 2018 under ‘Island Records,’ a reputed label. The album included singles such as ‘A BRAINDEAD Civilizatixn’ and ‘We Waste Time FADED.’
He was also featured in ‘Carnage’s second studio album, ‘Battered Bruised & Bloody.’ He also performed at the 2018 ‘Reading and Leeds Festivals.’
