Who is Remy Ma?
Reminisce Mackie (stage name Remy Ma) is an American rapper and one of the very few female rappers who have made it big in the American hip hop scene. Rapper Big Pun scouted her out after hearing her rhymes and poetry and asked her to join his rap group ‘Terror Squad’. Remy was signed on by Columbia Records in 2000. Her very first claim to fame came as ‘Ante Up Remix’ by M.O.P and just like that, she arrived on the American hip hop scene with her unique approach to the lyrics in her raps and her vocal skills. Remy’s debut album titled ‘There’s something About Remy: Based on a True Story’ was released in 2006 and the album became a hit immediately earning widespread respect off the singles such as ‘Whateva’ and ‘Conceited’. Just as her career was going towards a dream beginning, a prison sentence came her way and she had to do the six years of jail time out of her 8 year sentence. She was released in 2014 and started collaborating with artists such as DJ Khaled and Rick Ross while working on her next album.

Childhood & Early Life
Remy Ma was born Reminisce Mackie in Bronx, New York, on 30th May 1981 in an African neighborhood. She had to suffer a lot during her early life due to the problem of drug addiction in her family and was burdened with the responsibility of taking care of her siblings at a very early age. She was a poetry enthusiast and started writing poetry as a teenager to escape from her outside reality and keep her sanity intact amidst a chaotic neighborhood.
Remy was a bright student, and started rap battling in school. She spent most of her time in rap battles with her schoolmates and her poetry, which she brought into her rap songs, quickly made her famous. Soon after that, she graduated to battling professional rappers and became a popular freestyle rapper in her neighborhood.
The word spread quickly and Remy started making mixtapes, which were played in a few nightclubs here and there. MC Big Pun located her down and offered her a position in his rap group 'Terror Squad', where Remy learned tactics to become a successful rapper and just like that, her career officially kick-started
Career
Pun had many freestyle sessions with Remy Ma before considering her as one of the freshest rappers he had ever met and became her mentor. Ma’s very first appearances were in Pun’s album ‘Yeeeah Baby’ in the songs ‘Ms. Martin’ and ‘You Was wrong’. She featured on the album with the name Remy Martin.
Big Pun died soon after, and Fat Joe took the responsibility of shaping Ma up for a career in rapping and as a result, she was signed on by his label SRC along with Universal. One of her early songs ‘Lean Back’ got her a Grammy nomination and a few other songs from her debut album topped several charts. These included ‘Whateva’, ‘Conceited’ and ‘Feels so Good’. In 2006, arrived her very first album ‘There’s Something About Remy: The True Story’.
Even though she was a fresher at that time, the album sold 37000 units in the first week itself and went on to receive critical appreciation by Billboard to Rolling Stone to XXL Magazine. In 2007, Remy had to see the face of the prison post a shooting incident she was found to be involved in. It happened just when her career was starting to bloom.
She was released from the prison in 2014 and upon coming back, she quickly got back with recording music, but she stuck mostly to the collaborations with other rappers. While in the jail, she received popularity in an unlikely country, lovers praised Remy for her style and was even featured in a documentary titled ‘Black Lifestyle in Japan’. She was named to be the most popular female rappers in Japan.
Soon after returning back home, she collaborated with DJ Khaled in the latter’s song ‘They Dont Love You No More’ and in 2015, Remy released an LP titled ‘Remy on the Rocks’. In the same year, a collaborative song with Rick Ross and Yo Gotti titled ‘Hands Down’ came and Remy marked her comeback in style. Some further collaboration saw her working alongside Jay-Z, David Guetta, The Game and Snoop Dogg.
In 2015, VH1 signed Remy for their musical show ‘Love & Hip Hop’, and she featured on the sixth season of the show. Fat Joe made an announcement soon after that he and Remy have been working on a joint album for quite sometime. The first single from the album was released in early 2016 titled ‘All the way up’ and featured Montana apart from Remy and Fat. The album title ‘Plata O Plomo’, got eventually released in March 2016 to wide acclaim.
However, the album ran into controversy due to its title, it translated from Spanish to English as ‘Money or Bullets’, a phrase which was frequently used by the notorious Mexican druglord, Pablo Escobar. Presently, Remy has been busy with her second solo album, tentatively titled ‘Seven Winters Six Summers’ and from the title of it, it seems like she would describe her experience of being in prison.
Personal Life
In July 2007, Remy Ma turned herself in to New York Police Department in a case of a shooting incident in which she was involved. She was identified as the shooter and was sentenced to 8 years to prison, which she underwent for 6 years before getting released in 2014. Remy married her fiancé, Papoose, while serving her time in the jail in May 2008.
A letter she wrote from jail in 2009 revealed that she has been constantly writing and the love towards her fans won’t let her give up this easy. She said that once she gets out of the prison, she would start again right away.
Remy has also been a part of several feuds with fellow rappers, and the most notorious among them were the feuds with Nicki Minaj and Foxy Brown.
