Childhood & Early Life
Kylie Minogue was born on May 28, 1968, in Melbourne, Australia, to an accountant called Ronald Charles Minogue and a former stage dancer from Wales, Australia Carol Ann Minogue. She was raised in Surrey Hill in Melbourne and was sent to Camberwell High School. She was the eldest of the three children.
Kylie along with her younger sister Dannii, began their careers together as child artists on the Australian television. When Kylie was only 12, she did small time roles in soap operas like ‘Skyways’, ‘The Sullivans’ and ‘The Henderson Kids’. Her big break in the entertainment industry came with her ‘tomboy car mechanic character of Charlene’ on one of the most popular Australian soap operas called ‘Neighbors’ in 1986.
Career
With her big break in 1986 in ‘Neighbors’, kylie got noticed at one of the benefit concerts where she performed a song called ‘The Loco-motion’ along with the other cast members of the show. She got noticed by the aces of the music industry and in 1987 she signed a contract with an Australian recording company called the Mushroom Records. ‘The Loco-Motion’ spent 7 weeks at the top position at the Australian music charts and became the highest selling track in Australia in 1980s.
In 1988, the huge success of ‘The Loco-Motion’ in Australia led the British music producers: Stock, Aitken and Waterman, to sign her with their record labels in order to make her into an international star. This led to the production of her debut album called ‘Kylie’ in the same year and a particular track from the album ‘I should Be So Lucky’ became an international favorite.
In 1989, Kylie recorded another album called ‘Enjoy Yourself’ with her ‘Neighbors’ co-star and boyfriend at that time, Jason Donovan. The duets from this album instantly became chart toppers. Her popularity was spiraling up and in the year 1990, Kylie was cast in the movie ‘The Delinquents’, which effectively transformed her image from an adorable pop star into a sexy movie star.
In 1990, Kylie came up with her third album called ‘Rhythm of Love’. This time her album had more of peppy dance numbers, which changed her ‘girl-next-door’ image. She was targeting more mature audience and she herself took the charge of thedesign of her music videos. Her hit single from this album ‘Better the Devil You Know’ showcased her to be more flamboyant and sexy.
In 1991, Kylie’s fourth album ‘Let’s Get to It’ failed to reach the top ten on the UK Album Chart. Singles like: ‘If You Were with Me Now’, ‘Give Me Just a Little More Time’ and ‘Word is Out’, belonged to this album. In order to promote the album more profusely, Kylie set on the ‘Let’s Get to It’ Tour. By this time Kylie adopted a more ‘indie’ style. In 1994, she signed a contract with the Deconstruction Records and released her fifth album called ‘Kylie Minogue’, which did very well in Europe and Australia. This was the time when she made a friendly appearance in the hit comedy of that time ‘The Vicar of Dibley’. She appeared in Australia’s Who Magazine amongst ‘the 30 Most Beautiful People in the World’, which impressed director Steven E. de Souza and he cast her opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme in ‘Street Fighter’.
In 1996, she collaborated with the Manic Street Preachers and recorded an album called ‘Impossible Princess’ but she retitled it ‘Kylie Minogue’ in the UK after the sad demise of Diana, Princess of Wales. It was the lowest selling album of her career. But in Australia alone the album was a hit and it remained 35 weeks on the album chart.
In 2000, she was dropped by her recording company Deconstruction Records and was taken up by Parlophone. The same year she released her seventh album ‘Light Years’, which featured a collection of various disco dance numbers. This album did very well in Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. The hit single from the album ‘Spinning Around’ became her number one track in the UK in 10 years. The album also featured a duet with Robbie Williams called ‘Kids’.
In 2001, she came up with her eighth album ‘Fever’. The album sold 8 million copies throughout Australia, Europe and the United States. The single ‘Can’t Get You Out of My head’ became the biggest successful single of her entertainment career. In 2002, she toured the world with her concert ‘KylieFever2002’. It turned out to be her biggest production till date.
In 2005, Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer, which led to the cancellation of the Australian leg of her hugely popular tour called ‘Showgirl’. She had to go into an immediate medical treatment.
