Who is Hatchie (Harriette Pilbeam)?

Harriette Pilbeam is an Australian singer-songwriter who is more popular by her stage name Hatchie. A native of Queensland, she developed a love for music quite early in her life. Singing since she was a child, Pilbeam started taking guitar lessons after she turned thirteen. She also learned how to play bass, piano, and clarinet but soon began to prefer bass over others. During this period, she joined her first band. After completing her education, she initially wanted to pursue the career of a band manager. On realising she didn’t understand much about music management despite being in a band herself, she postponed it for a few years. The first significant group she was part of was Go Violets, which was formed in 2011. Hatchie later joined a band named Babaganouj which she is still part of. In May 2017, she released her first solo single ‘Try’ to positive reviews. Encouraged, she went on to release several others. Hatchie cites Cocteau Twins, The Sundays, Wolf Alice, and Kylie Minogue as some of the musicians who have inspired her over the years.

Career

Since Hatchie was 17 years old, she has been part of several bands. In 2011, she formed the all-girl group ‘Go Violets’ with Phoebe Imhoff (guitar and vocals), Alice Rezende (guitar and vocals), and Ruby McGregor (drums, guitar, and vocals). The group put out their debut extended play titled ‘Heart Slice’ on October 4, 2013 through Create/Control record label. A few months later, the group announced their dissolution.

Hatchie then joined the group Babaganouj. Besides Hatchie, the other members of the group initially were Charles Sale (vocals and guitar) and George Browning (drums). Ruby McGregor, Hatchie’s band-mate from Go Violets, later joined the group. They all are part of various other projects as well and are also working on their respective solo careers. They have released four albums to date: ‘Sife Lucks’ (2013), ‘Pillar of Light’ (2016), ‘Hard to Be’ (2016), and ‘Clarity Restored’ (2017)’.

Personal Life

Harriette Pilbeam was born in May 1993 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Little is known about her family or her childhood except for the minimal information she has provided in interviews over the years.

Singing has always been the single most important thing in her life. At the age of 13, she started taking guitar lessons but later switched to bass for a while. The shift proved to be a good decision as knowing how to play bass helped her with songwriting as well. She also learned how to play the piano and clarinet.

She attended the Queensland University of Technology and graduated with a degree in creative industries. Her major was the entertainment industry and she also did courses in music studies.

Trivia

It was originally her parents who called her by the nickname “Hatchie.” At first, Pilbeam hated it as she thought it was too cute. Nevertheless, it stuck and she is currently quite happy with it.
