Ty Olsson was born on January 28, 1974, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He spent his childhood in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Not much information is available about his family.

During his elementary school years, a teacher guided Olsson toward school plays. He soon developed an interest in performing arts and auditioned for a program at ‘Canterbury High School.’ He joined the institute, which was a renowned art school, and studied dramatic arts, dance, and music.

After graduating from high school, he began exploring options for further training in acting. By that time, he had already begun accepting minor supporting roles. In 1997, he joined ‘Studio 58,’ the prestigious drama school of ‘Langara College’ in Vancouver. He studied at this institute for the following three years.

After completing his training at ‘Studio 58’ he acted in George Bernard Shaw’s plays at the ‘Shaw Festival.’ Soon, he returned to Vancouver and started searching for roles in TV and films.

Ty Olsson began his acting career in 1988. His first job was that of a voice actor as ‘Astonaige Medoz’ in ‘Kido Senshi Gandamu: Gyakushu no Sha.’

Some of his most noteworthy works include his role in ‘The X-Files’ (1993), the role of ‘Lt. Aaron Kelly’ in ‘Battlestar Galactica’ (2003–2009), and the role of ‘Mitchell Laurio’ in ‘X2’ (2003).

Ty Olsson was the voice of ‘Herry,’ a descendent of ‘Hercules,’ in the well-known Canadian series ‘Class of the Titans’ (2005–2007). He became famous as the voice of the adorable dragon ‘Ord’ in the ‘PBS Kids’ animated series for children ‘Dragon Tales’ (1999–2005).

He has been part of many famous films, such as ‘Lake Placid’ (1999), ‘The Score’ (2005), ‘Just Friends’ (2005), ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ (2011), ‘Godzilla’ (2014), and ‘Life on the Line’ (2015). He has also lent his voice to various TV shows, such as ‘Transformers Energon’ (2004), ‘Iron Man: Armored Adventures’ (2009–2012), and ‘Voltron Force’ (2012) among others.

He has featured in the video games ‘Dragon Tales: Dragon Seek’ (2000) and ‘Dead Rising 4’ (2016).

His upcoming film, ‘Gumshoes, ’is a sequel to ‘Music High.’

The role that brought him great reviews was that of Mark Bingham, the real life 9/11 victim, in the ‘A&E’ TV movie ‘Flight 93.’ His portrayal of a vampire, ‘Benny Lafitte,’ in seasons 8 and 10 of the series ‘Supernatural, was also well-appreciated. He is best known as the voice of ‘Ord’ in ‘Dragon Tales’ and as ‘Kyle’ in the ‘YTV’ animated series ‘Being Ian.’

Ty Olsson was nominated for the ‘Best Actor’ award at the 2016 ‘UBCP/ACTRA Awards,’ for his work in ‘Unreal.’

In 2017, he won the ‘Leo Award’ in the category of ‘Best Supporting performance by a Male in a Television Movie,’ for his role in the movie ‘A Surrogate’s Nightmare.’

He was married to Leanna Nash, an actor who has starred in the TV series ‘Smallville’ (2001), ‘True Calling’ (2003), and ‘Catch and Release’ (2006). They divorced in 2012. They have two daughters, Mackenzie and Dagan Hunter.
