Charmaine Sheh Sze-Man is an accomplished award-winning Hong Kong actress. She has not only been successful in winning millions of hearts in her homeland with several notable TVB television series for almost two decades but has also expanded her career beyond national borders, in China. A graduate from the International Hotel Management Institute Switzerland, she took part in the 1997 Miss Hong Kong Pageant and finished as second runner-up following which she was signed under TVB, the first wireless commercial TV station in her homeland. Although initially she drew criticism for her acting skills, with time she developed and honed her skills to emerge as one of the revered actresses both in homeland and overseas. Her breakthrough came with TVB drama ‘Return of the Cuckoo’ which was followed by other notable series like ‘Beyond the Realm of Conscience’, ‘Line Walker’, ‘Can't Buy Me Love’ and ‘Maidens’ Vow’. Childhood & Early Life

She was born See-Man Sheh on May 28, 1975, in Hong Kong, British Crown Colony. Her nickname is Ah Sheh. There is hardly any information available on her childhood, early education and family background.

She attended the International Hotel Management Institute Switzerland, and obtained a diploma in hotel management from there in 1994.

Career

In 1997, Charmaine participated in ‘Miss Hong Kong Pageant’ organized by TVB. She emerged as the second runner-up with Virginia Yung as the winner of the crown and Vivian Lee as first runner-up.

Following the beauty pageant, she was signed under TVB and thus began her new journey in the world of acting and entertainment.

She made her acting debut with the 1998 TVB series ‘Time Off’. In her initial acting pursuits, she essayed starring roles in many TVB series, but received criticism for her acting. Such criticisms, however, could not bog her down and she kept working towards improving her acting.

She landed up with her big break in the TVB modern drama ‘Return of the Cuckoo’ that aired from July 10, 2000 to August 4, 2000. Her leading role of Chuk Kwan-Ho in the series fetched her Favorite On-screen Partners award (shared with Julian Cheung) and Top 10 Favorite Television Characters award at the TVB Anniversary Awards that year.

She made her big-screen debut with the December 7, 2000, released film ‘Perfect Match’, written and directed by Shu-Kai Chung.

Her next notable series was the TVB television period drama ‘Country Spirit’ that aired for 42 episodes starting from October 29, 2001 to December 22, 2001. Her performance as Lai Sun-fung in the series earned her TVB Anniversary Award for My Favourite Television Character that year.

Her brilliant performance portraying four characters over four generations Ngai Yu-fung / Wong Tze-kwan /Jenny Bak Wai-jan / Dai Si-ga earned her several accolades in her homeland and beyond.

She won two major awards namely Best Actress Award and My Favourite Female TV Character award at the TVB Anniversary Awards in 2006 for her performance in ‘Maidens' Vow’. This made her the first TVB actress to achieve such feat in the same year in the history of the award ceremony.

The theme song for HK Children's version of ‘Jewel in the Palace’ won her several awards including Best Female Singer award at the 2007 Hong Kong Metro Hit Radio Children Songs Award. That year, she was shortlisted at the 35th International Emmy Awards in the semi-finals of its Best Actress award category.

Moving on with several other TVB television series, she landed up with the channel’s costume drama romantic comedy series ‘Can't Buy Me Love’ that not only fostered her burgeoning acting career in homeland but also upped her fame and popularity overseas.

Her leading role of Princess Chiu-yeung in ‘Can't Buy Me Love’ that aired from August 23, 2010 to October 3, 2010 brought her several national and international accolades.
