Childhood & Early Life

Wu Chun was born Goh Kiat Chun, on October 10, 1979, into a wealthy Bruneian family, in Bandar Seri Begawan. His family is of Chinese descent and has royal connections, His father, Goh Kim Tian, made his fortune in real estate. The family also owns a very well-known car agency company recognized throughout the country. Chun is the nephew of Bruneian ‘Legislative Council’ MP Goh King Chin. Chun has recently disclosed that the king of Brunei had once made an offer to adopt him as a child for a certain sum of money (a practice common with the royal family). His father refused the offer, much to Chun’s delight, and Chun was left with a loving family, instead of being rich and alone.

He attended ‘Chung Hwa Middle School,’ where he reportedly met his high-school sweetheart who would later become his wife.

Chun later moved to Australia to study at Melbourne’s ‘RMIT University,’ eventually graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Upon moving back to Asia, he played for Brunei’s national basketball team and worked as a model for ‘Yilin’ in Taiwan and ‘Diva Models’ in Singapore.

Career

Chun ventured into the entertainment industry during a trip to Taiwan in 2005. A TV producer he met and impressed during this time recommended that he play the male lead in the live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga series ‘Tokyo Juliet’ (2006). He also contributed to the soundtrack for this series. Chun was not fluent in Mandarin at that time, and his dialogues had to be dubbed.

The same year, he also featured in ‘KO One,’ the series that launched ‘Fahrenheit,’ and was invited to join the burgeoning Mandopop boy band as its final member. Chun sang vocal bass for the band. Interestingly, each of the four members of the band represented a season, and Chun represented autumn (cool or 59 degrees).

The band released its first album in September 2006, gaining popularity in Taiwan and Mainland China, before becoming popular across East and Southeast Asia. Between 2006 and 2009, ‘Fahrenheit’ became one of the fastest-growing musical acts in the country, releasing three best-selling albums: ‘Fahrenheit’ in 2006, ‘Two-Sided Fahrenheit’ in 2008, and ‘Love You More and More’ in 2009. They also played in major concerts and appeared on TV.

In the same period, Chun continued to act independently. He was also part of the TV series ‘Hanazakarino Kimitachihe’ (2006), ‘Romantic Princess’ (2007), ‘The X-Family’ (2007), and ‘Hot Shot’ (2008). He also remained focused on several entrepreneurial ventures and received the ‘Asia Pacific Entrepreneurial Award’ (APEA) for ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ in 2008.

In 2009, he made his film debut with ‘The Butterfly Lovers,’ beginning a flourishing film career that continues to date.

2010 marked the release of his final album with ‘Fahrenheit,’ ‘Super Hot.’ The year also saw the release of his second film. Although rumors claimed that he would play ‘Night Tenjo’ in the live-action adaption of the manga ‘Absolute Boyfriend’ the same year, bandmate Jiro Wang replaced him in the project. At this point, he was already considering leaving the group to focus on his acting and (at that point) secret family.

In 2011, Chun finally announced his departure from the band, ostensibly to act more. With his departure, the other ‘Fahrenheit’ members also began to focus on solo projects, beginning an indefinite hiatus for the group. The members quit on good terms, with the possibility of a future collaboration or reunion.

Since 2011, Chun has continued to act, appearing most notably in the series ‘Kindaichi Case Files’ (2013–2014). He has also been part of several films. His work on the international collaboration ‘Guardians of the Tomb’ (2018), with Kellan Lutz, Kelsey Grammer, and Li Bingbing, is especially noteworthy in terms of his growing international popularity.

In 2014, he was appointed as the international brand ambassador of ‘Royal Brunei Airlines.’ The same year, he began endorsing tourism in Taiwan.

After revealing the fact that he had a family, Chun also ventured into reality TV, appearing with his daughter, Nei Nei, in ‘Dad is Back’ (2014) and with Nei Nei and his son, Max, in ‘Where Are We Going, Dad?’ (2017).

Awards & Achievements

Chun has won several awards for his work, both within and outside the entertainment industry. His group ‘Fahrenheit’ earned the ‘HITO Music Award’ for the ‘Best Male Group’ in 2007 and the ‘Chinese Music Award’ for the ‘Best New Group.’

Apart from the ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ award (2008), he also received the ‘APEA Corporate Social Responsibility Award’ in 2013. He earned an ‘Excellent Youth Award’ from the Bruneian king, Hassanal Bolkiah, in 2015.

Personal Life

Chun has been involved with his high-school classmate Li Ying since he was introduced to her by his brother-in-law at the age of 16. They married secretly in 2009. In 2011, when she was pregnant with their first child, Chun took time off from work to be with her, pretending to care for his ailing father. Although he could not control the rumors of his marriage and fatherhood, Chun did not confirm the news until 2013. Chun and Li have two children: Nei Nei, born in 2011, and Max, born in 2013.

Chun and his wife are both involved in several entrepreneurial ventures. He is the managing director of ‘Fitness Zone,’ a large health club, and owns two food businesses and a salon.

He is involved with the ‘Brunei Anti-Narcotic Drug Association,’ where he was appointed as an ambassador in 2012. He organized two female-only charity marathons named ‘She Runs’ to fund cancer research for children, in 2015 and 2016. He also promotes blood donation campaigns. He undertook a 10-hour road trip in China to distribute medical supplies in small villages, raising $68,000 for ‘Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam.’ In 2016, he was appointed as a goodwill ambassador for a large charity concert benefiting individuals with special needs.

Trivia

Chin directs TV commercials for ‘InterContinental Hotels.’

He is extremely scared of spiders.
