Tilda Cobham-Hervey is an Australian actress and director who started her career as a circus performer. Born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia, she was interested in circus and physical enactment since young age. She trained and performed in ‘Cirkidz’, a youth circus troupe from Adelaide, wherein she specialized in trapeze, hula-hoop and acrobatic pitching. She was one of the founding members of ‘Gravity and other Myths,’ an Adelaide based circus group. A show called ‘Freefall,’ which she had co-devised, won awards at the ‘Adelaide Fringe Festival’ and ‘Melbourne Fringe Festival.’ She toured around the Australian cities and such countries as Ireland and Canada with the show ‘The Age I’m In.’ When Cobham-Hervey was 16, she made her acting debut in a ‘Closer Productions’ film ’52 Tuesdays,’ which won her award nominations. Childhood & Early Life
Tilda Cobham-Hervey was born in September 1994, in Adelaide, South Australia, to Geoff Cobham, who is a set and lighting designer and production director, and his wife Roz Hervey, a dance teacher and former dancer. Cobham-Hervey has a younger brother.
She studied at the ‘Marryatville High School.’ She received training and also performed in the ‘Youth Circus School’ called ‘Cirkidz’ at Adelaide. She began participating in this troupe from the age of 9 and performed for 7 years, and also, was a part of five major productions. She was accomplished in trapeze, acrobatic pitching and hula-hoop. Along with physical part, the theatrical aspect and story-telling were also important parts of the performance.
Cobham-Hervey co-founded an Adelaide based circus group, ‘Gravity And other Myths’ in 2009. She co-devised a show ‘Freefall’ for this circus group and in 2010, her show won the ‘Best Circus’ award at the world’s second largest annual art festival, ‘The Adelaide Fringe Festival.’ (This festival features more than 5,000 artists from around Australia and world, and is conducted for 31 days and nights during February and March every year.) In 2011, her circus show won the ‘Tour Ready Award’ at the same festival. It won ‘Best Circus Award’ at the ‘Melbourne Fringe Festival’ in 2011 and she earned the ‘Best Emerging Circus/Physical Theater Performer’ award at the same festival.
She performed in a show ‘The Age I’m In,’ which was a part of Sydney and Adelaide festivals. Along with this show, she toured around Australia (17 cities) and also in Ireland, Canada and Korea.
Career
Cobham-Hervey made her debut in ‘Closer Productions’ feature film ’52 Tuesdays’ (2014) in the role of ‘Billie.’ (She also works with the ‘Closer Productions’ on cross art form installations.) Her entry in the cinema field was quite unplanned. She had accompanied a few friends to an open audition for this Sophie Hyde feature film and the 16 year old Cobham-Hervey got the lead part in it. This film fetched her nominations for ‘Australian Film Critics Association Award’ for ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Film Critics Circle of Australia Award’ for ‘Best Performance by a Young Actor.’ The film was awarded the ‘Crystal Bear for the Best Film Generation 14plus’ at the ‘Berlin Film Festival’ (2014).
After her film ’52 Tuesdays’ was released at the ‘Sundance Film Festival,’ she was signed by the ‘Creative Artists Agency’ in the USA and by the ‘United Management’ in Australia.
In 2012, she essayed the supporting role of ‘Grace’ in the ‘Projector Films’ movie ‘One Eyed Girl,’ which was released in 2014. The film ‘Marcia and The Shark,’ where she played the lead role of ‘Marcia,’ was also released in 2014. In 2015, she appeared as ‘Huldra’ in the film ‘Girl Asleep’ and the following year she was seen as ‘Charlotte’ in the film ‘The Suitor.’
Cobham-Hervey was cast as ‘Sally’ in the 2018 American-Australian thriller film ‘Hotel Mumbai,’ which is based on the true incident of 2008 attacks at ‘Taj Mahal Palace Hotel’ in Mumbai, India. Her forthcoming film, ‘I Am Woman,’ is a bio-pic about Australian singer Helen Reddy, wherein she portrays the titular role.
Her work on TV includes the role of ‘Eliza Grayson’ in 8 episodes of the 2015 TV series ‘The Kettering Incident.’ This was followed by her portrayal of ‘Emma Taylor’ in the 2016 Australian TV tragedy program, ‘Barracuda.’
Cobham-Hervey once again worked with Sophie Hyde in the 6-part TV series ‘Fucking Adelaide.’ She portrayed the role of ‘Kitty’ in the series that was premiered in October 2017 at the ‘Adelaide Film Festival.’
She made her theater debut in a 2016 play ‘Things I Know to be True,’ a co-production of ‘State Theater Company’ of South Australia and ‘Frantic Assembly’ of UK. In the play, she played the role of ‘Rozie Price.’ In 2017, she worked in the ‘State Theater Company’ production, ‘Vale,’ wherein Cobham-Hervey essayed the role of ‘Isla Vale,’ while her father was the lighting designer of this play.
In 2017, she made her directorial debut with ‘A Field Guide to Being A Twelve-Year-Old Girl.’ The script of this movie flowed with the experiences of twelve 12-year-old girls. This ‘Closer Productions’ short film, commissioned by ‘ABC’ and ‘Screen Australia,’ was premiered simultaneously at ‘2017 Adelaide Film Festival’ and on ‘ABC ME’ on 11 October 2017. The film won the prestigious ‘Crystal Bear for the Best Short Film’ at the ‘68th Berlin International Film Festival’s Generation KPlus Section.’
