Meghan Elizabeth Trainor is an American singer, songwriter and record producer, who wrote, recorded, performed and produced three independently released albums before she turned 18. A child prodigy, Trainor’s interest in singing and songwriting can be traced to her musically-inclined family; her father being her pillar of support. Since an early age, Meghan Trainor exhibited a fondness for music, which was appreciated and encouraged by her parents. By eleven, she had started writing music and two years later penned her first original score. In 2014, came to limelight with the release of her major-label debut studio album, ‘Title’. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and went on to become a big hit with the sale of overr one million copies domestically. Childhood & Early Life
Meghan Elizabeth Trainor was born on December 22, 1993, in Nantucket, Massachusetts, to Kelly Anne "Kelli" (Jekanowski) and Gary Trainor. She has two brothers, Ryan and Justin.
Born in a musical family, her father being a music teacher and musician, it was only natural for Trainor to be blessed with the skills. Since the age of six, she accompanied her father for singing at local church. By the age of 11, Trainor began writing music and started working to make a career as a recording artist.
Encouraged by her father, Trainor began exploring various musical genres and instruments including piano, guitar and bongo drum. She was just 12 when she began performing as part of the band Island Fusion that included her aunt, brother, and father. The band performed covers, soca music and Trainor's compositions.
At the age of 13, she penned her first original song, ‘Give Me a Chance’. Same time, the family moved to North Eastham, Massachusetts. Trainor gained her education from Nauset Regional High School where she studied guitar and was a substitute cheerleader. She even sang and played trumpet in a jazz band for three years.
Encouraged by her parents, Trainor attended numerous songwriting conventions. Meanwhile, she recorded and produced her compositions in Logic Studio until her home studio became functional.
Career
Trainor’s professional career began in 2009 with the release of her eponymous debut album, ‘Meghan Trainor’. The album received significant airplay from local radio stations. Meanwhile, she enrolled for a Summer Performance Program at the Berklee College of Music. She was one of the finalists in the songwriting competition.
In 2011, Trainor came up with two acoustic albums, ‘I'll Sing with You’ and ‘Only 17’. What followed were a couple of offers including full scholarship to Berklee College of Music which she forego to sign a publishing deal with Carla Wallace at Big Yellow Dog Music.
Starting off as a songwriter-for-hire, she moved to song publishing. Her profile required her to travel to Nashville, New York and Los Angeles where she wrote and helped produce country and pop music. Eventually, Trainor moved to Nashville where she befriended Kevin Kadish. The duo shared a common love for retro music.
In 2013, together with Kadish, Trainor penned the song ‘All About that Bass’. After a series of rejection, Trainor decided to record the song herself.
In June 2014, ‘All About That Bass’ released and instantly became a viral hit. The song reached number one spot in 58 countries and became one of the best-selling singles of all times. It was certified six-times platinum, selling over six million copies internationally. Labelled one of the biggest singles of 2014, it gave Trainor her much-needed and much-deserved career breakthrough.
‘All About That Bass’ was closely followed by Trainor's debut extended play (EP), ‘Title’. Released in September 2014, the album peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and number 17 on the Canadian Albums Chart. Since her three prior-released independent albums were pulled out from circulation, ‘Title’ served as her debut album.
Next, she released her second single, ‘Lips Are Movin’ which peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, making Trainor the fifth female artist to follow up her chart-topping debut hit with another top 5 single. The single earned double-platinum certification.
By 2014, Trainor’s popularity knew no bounds. She was listed as the fourth most Trending Music Artist in Google's Year in Search for 2014. Furthermore, Billboard ranked her as the fourth Top New Artist of the year, and 12th on their own 21 Under 21 2014 list.
Following the success of her debut single and album, Trainor came up with the singles ‘Dear Future Husband’ and ‘Like I’m Gonna Lose You’. She also featured in Charlie Puth's first single ‘Marvin Gaye’.
Just when her career was spearheading speedily, Trainor’s health complications made her take a backseat. She was diagnosed with a vocal cord hemorrhage and was advised a complete vocal rest.
In August 2015, Trainor co-wrote Rascal Flatts' single ‘I Like the Sound of That’. Two months later she appeared on Undateable as the musical guest and later made a cameo appearance as a customer named Meghan.
In January 2016, Trainor announced the completion of her second studio album ‘Thank You’. She released the album’s first single ‘No’ which peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100. She closely followed it up with four promotional singles including ‘Watch Me Do’, ‘I Love Me’, ‘Better (featuring Yo Gotti)’ and ‘Mom’.
Trainor’s second studio album ‘Thank You’ was exclusively released on Apple Music on May 6, 2016. A day prior to this, its second single ‘Me Too’ was released.
