Born in a musical family, her father being a music teacher and musician, it was only natural for Trainor to be blessed with the skills. Since the age of six, she accompanied her father for singing at local church. By the age of 11, Trainor began writing music and started working to make a career as a recording artist.
Encouraged by her father, Trainor began exploring various musical genres and instruments including piano, guitar and bongo drum. She was just 12 when she began performing as part of the band Island Fusion that included her aunt, brother, and father. The band performed covers, soca music and Trainor's compositions.
At the age of 13, she penned her first original song, ‘Give Me a Chance’. Same time, the family moved to North Eastham, Massachusetts. Trainor gained her education from Nauset Regional High School where she studied guitar and was a substitute cheerleader. She even sang and played trumpet in a jazz band for three years.
Encouraged by her parents, Trainor attended numerous songwriting conventions. Meanwhile, she recorded and produced her compositions in Logic Studio until her home studio became functional.
Trainor’s professional career began in 2009 with the release of her eponymous debut album, ‘Meghan Trainor’. The album received significant airplay from local radio stations. Meanwhile, she enrolled for a Summer Performance Program at the Berklee College of Music. She was one of the finalists in the songwriting competition.
In 2011, Trainor came up with two acoustic albums, ‘I'll Sing with You’ and ‘Only 17’. What followed were a couple of offers including full scholarship to Berklee College of Music which she forego to sign a publishing deal with Carla Wallace at Big Yellow Dog Music.
Starting off as a songwriter-for-hire, she moved to song publishing. Her profile required her to travel to Nashville, New York and Los Angeles where she wrote and helped produce country and pop music. Eventually, Trainor moved to Nashville where she befriended Kevin Kadish. The duo shared a common love for retro music.
In 2013, together with Kadish, Trainor penned the song ‘All About that Bass’. After a series of rejection, Trainor decided to record the song herself.
In June 2014, ‘All About That Bass’ released and instantly became a viral hit. The song reached number one spot in 58 countries and became one of the best-selling singles of all times. It was certified six-times platinum, selling over six million copies internationally.
