Childhood & Early Life

Lim Ju-hwan was born in Seoul, South Korea on May 18, 1982. He has admitted in his interviews that ever since he was a kid, he had a very ‘cold’ nature. He wasn’t very close to his family, and mostly didn’t communicate with them at all. This trait allowed him to spend more lonely time with himself, and hence he independently thought about a career in different sectors.

In the high school, Lim participated in several dramas and sharpened his acting skills. He was known as one of the best actors from his school acting troop and by the third year of high school, he became a part of play ‘Good Doctor’, which was performed at the National Youth Film Festival. He received the best actor award for his performance. He also donned the director’s hat for the play ‘Pay Tuition Back’ in his high school senior year.

Lim always carried an independent spirit inside him and wanted to lead a life where there were no limits as a result of which he moved out of his parent’s house at a very early age, right after high school. By now he had realised that his interest lay the entertainment world.

Meanwhile, he also pursued his higher education from the Daejin University in theatre and films to further sharpen his acting skills.

His struggles came to a pleasant halt when he was signed up by one of the biggest South Korean modelling agencies ‘The Men’, which also managed actors. Soon, he started modelling and not much later, also started auditioning for roles in TV.

Career

Lim Ju-hwan started his acting career playing minor and supporting roles and made his acting debut in 2004 with the series ‘Magic’ and in 2005 he appeared in a small role in the series ‘A Love to Kill’.

He gained further exposure with the 2006 film ‘A Millionaire’s First Love’. He next appeared in ‘Arang’ wherein he portrayed the younger version of the lead character Hyun-ki.

He carried on with his acting stints in the series’ ‘The Snow Queen’ and ‘Drama City’ in the next couple of years, but his career was not picking up the desired pace as he was mostly getting offered the side or the supporting roles.

His role as a blind painter in an episode of ‘Auction House’ received some favourable reviews.

All his hard work paid-off with ‘Tamra, the Island’, a show which combined romantic comedy with historical fiction. The series premiered in 2009 and although the initial reviews for the show were polarising, the series picked up pace and was later acclaimed as a cult TV series. Lim received first major acting award of his career ‘New Actor of the Year’ award at the Korean Culture and Entertainment Awards.

In 2009, he appeared as a school kid in ‘Boys over Flowers’, which was greatly appreciated and he gained a large female fan following.

In 2011, Lim appeared in a musical drama show ‘What’s Up’. It was about a group of youngsters who steal money from drunken people at night. Lim played the leading role in the series. Another notable film that he appeared in was ‘The Suicide Forecast’, where he played a homeless man with a golden heart.

Lim enlisted in the mandatory military service in 2011, and it turned to be troublesome for him as he was found to be suffering from some heart problems and fainted during the training. He was later hospitalized for three months. But being a strong willed man, he opted to finish his service despite an option for an early discharge.

After his release from the military training, he made a solid comeback with the international hit ‘The Con Artists’, a multi starrer film which featured many young and seasoned Korean actors at that time. The film came out in 2014 and became a domestic and international hit.

In 2015, Lim appeared in the highly anticipated TV series ‘Shine or go Crazy’, a period drama about romance blooming up between a prince and a princess. In the very same year, Lim was seen in the series ‘Oh My Ghostess’, where he played the role of a police officer, who seems shady. Both his performances were well received. For the latter, he received a nomination for the Best Villain award at the Annual Drama Fever Awards.

In 2016, he featured in ‘Uncontrollably Fond’, a successful TV series. In the same year, he did a film titled ‘Broker’.

In 2017, he appeared in Television with the series ‘The Bride of Habaek’, which is a fantasy romance drama and Lim plays the role of a semi-god in there. He also appeared in a comedy film titled ‘Because I Love you’, which revolves around a spirit that inhabits bodies of people unlucky in love.
