Kim Tae-ri is a South Korean model and actress. She started by working as an ad model. She then appeared in a few minor roles in various short films before her acting career took an amazing turn when she was offered the role of an orphan in the Park Chan-wook directed erotic-psychological thriller, ‘The Handmaiden.’ Park Chan-wook later said that since Kim reminded him of Kang Hye-jung, he featured her in his movie ‘The Handmaiden.’ As many as 1500 people had auditioned for the role which was eventually bagged by Kim. Kim has appeared in movies, such as ‘1987: When the Day Comes’ (2017), and ‘Little Forest’ (2018).

Childhood & Early Life

Kim was born on April 24, 1990, in Seoul, South Korea. She studied Journalism and Mass Communication at Kyung Hee University in Yongin, Seoul.

After completing her college education, she decided to become an actress. Her parents were supportive of her decision to pursue acting. Kim had to take up a number of jobs before she could finally pursue her acting career. She worked at a number of cafes, KFC, and for a local daily as well.

Early Career

She started working in the entertainment industry as a model. She was seen in TV commercials for different brands. In 2010, she made her film debut in a short film titled ‘Citizen Zombie.’

She then made an appearance in a music video called ‘Spring Is Coming’ by Tafka Buddha. She went on to make appearances in more such music videos by artists like Bitnara Yang and Number Nine.

In 2013, she made her theatre debut in ‘Spoonface Steinberg,’ which was written by British playwright, Lee Hall. ‘Spoonface Steinberg’ was first aired on BBC as a monologue in 1997, but due to its popularity, it was later performed on stage.

She appeared in three short films, namely ‘Who Is It?’, ‘Lock Out’ and ‘Moon Young’ in 2015.

In 2016, Kim beat around 1500 candidates at an audition to grab the role of Sook-hee, in Park Chan-wook’s movie ‘The Handmaiden.’

‘The Handmaiden’ is an erotic psychological thriller, adapted from Sarah Waters' novel, ‘Fingersmith.’ The movie was appreciated by the critics, and it was a commercial hit too.

‘The Handmaiden’ competed at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival for the prestigious Palme d’Or award. A few controversial scenes featuring Sook-hee (played by Kim) and Lady Hideko (played by Kim Min-hee), became the topic of discussion at the film festival.

Kim received applauds, awards and recognition for her acting skills. By delivering a mind-blowing performance in the movie, she proved that she was the best choice for the role.

Riding high on the success of ‘The Handmaiden,’ Kim went on to appear in a cameo role in the hit American TV series, ‘Entourage’ in 2016.
