Who is Gavin Rossdale?

Gavin Rossdale is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the British rock band ‘Bush’. Although he is a native of London, he found bigger success in the U.S. as compared to his home country where he had been criticized for not being a part of the Britpop scene. Undaunted by his countrymen’s disapproval, this talented singer and his band mates went on to achieve great fame and fortune in America. Rossdale and fellow guitarist Nigel Pulsford formed the ‘Bush’ band in 1992 along with Dave Parsons and Sacha Gervasi. Their first album ‘Sixteen Stone’ was a huge hit and the band went on to become one of the best selling rock groups of the decade. The band found commercial success and fame for the next few years. However, declining sales led to the disbanding of ‘Bush’ as the members went their separate ways after a decade of working together. Rossdale formed another band, ‘Institute’, with Chris Traynor, Cache Tolman and Charlie Walker. The band released only one album and could not do well, and broke up within two years. He then attempted to establish himself as a solo singer, but could not find much success. In 2010, Rossdale reorganized the band ‘Bush’ with new members and released an album ‘A Sea of Memories’ which was well liked by the audiences.

He attended Westminster School, but dropped out at 17 to start his own band. His band, called ‘Midnight’ was popular at the clubs and produced a couple of singles, but could not attain greater success.

Career

In order to explore bigger opportunities, he moved to Los Angeles in 1991 for 6 months. There he took a number of odd jobs like a house painter and a video art illustrator.

On his return to England, he met guitarist Nigel Pulsford, bassist Dave Parsons, screenwriter Sacha Gervasi and drummer Robin Goodridge with whom he formed a band called ‘Future Primitive’ in 1992.

In 1994, the band changed its name to ‘Bush’ and released their first album ‘Sixteen Stone’. The album was great success and became a best seller.

Their second album ‘Razorblade Suitcase’ was out in 1996. Although this album received mostly negative reviews from critics, it reached the number-one spot on the Billboard 200.

He formed a new alternative rock band ‘Institute’ in 2004 with Chris Traynor, Cache Tolman and Charlie Walker. The band released its first album, ‘Distort Yourself’ in 2005 which was moderately successful. However, the band could not do well and broke up in 2006.

Rossdale came out with his debut solo album, ‘Wanderlust’ in 2008. His attempt to go solo did not work much in his favour as the album did not do well.

He revived the band ‘Bush’ with former ‘Bush’ band mate Robin Goodridge, ‘Institute’ band mate Chris Traynor and new member Corey Britz. The reorganized band brought out their album, ‘The Sea of Memories’ in 2011. The album met with mixed reviews.

Bush’s second album, ‘Razorblade Suitcase’ which was out in 1996 was one of the last popular albums to bear a grunge sound. The tone of this album was darker than its predecessor and included singles like ‘Swallowed’ and ‘Greedy Fly’ which made it to the Top 20 of the U.K Singles Chart.
