Who is Travis Tritt?

James Travis Tritt, popularly known as Travis Tritt, is an American country singer and songwriter. He has released 12 country albums until now and most of his albums and hits were released under Warner Bros. records. It was Warner Bros. who recognized Tritt’s talent and sent his demo to LA who in turn asked their Nashville branch to sign him on. Seven of his albums are certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America and the highest-certified is ‘It's All About to Change (1991)’, which is certified triple-platinum. He has also charted more than 40 times on the Hot Country Songs chart and won two Grammy Awards, both for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. He is also a recipient of four awards from the Country Music Association, and has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Tritt is unique in the ways he presents himself - he never conformed to the idea of a traditional country singer and left out the standard cowboy hat, instead putting on the rock-style concerts. He is not only a singer but has also acted in various television movies and series. He has his own music publishing company called Post Oak.

Childhood & Early Life

Tritt was born on February 9, 1963 in Georgia to James and Gwen Tritt. He used to perform in a children’s choir at a church when he was young. He taught himself to play the guitar when he got one at 8.

Tritt started writing his own songs when he was a teenager and wanted to become a country singer like his idols Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Hank Williams Jr. He attended the Sprayberry High School.

While he was growing up, Tritt worked at places like a furniture store, supermarket and an air conditioning company. He was also making music with a small band and playing at the local clubs.

With the help of Warner Bros. Records, he started recording demos; they put together a demo called ‘Proud of the Country’ and sent it to Warner Bros. in LA. They signed him in 1987.

Career

Tritt released his first album, ‘Country Club’, in 1990. The title track broke into the country Top 10 and other singles like, ‘Help Me Hold On’ and ‘I’m Going to Be Somebody’ also topped the charts.

Tritt signed on Ken Kragen as his manager and since Kragen knew a lot of people in the Nashville circuit, it gave a boost to his career. In 1991, ‘It’s All About to Change’ came out and became the top-selling album.

In 1992, he released the second double-platinum certified album of his life, ‘T-R-O-U-B-L-E’. Its hit singles like ‘Lord Have Mercy on the Working Man’ and ‘Can I Trust You with My Heart’ peaked at Billboard charts.

He could not reprise the same success again throughout the rest of 1990s with his albums like, ‘Ten Feet Tall and Bulletproof (1994)’, ‘The Restless Kind (1996)’, ‘No More Looking Over My Shoulder (1998)’, etc. The albums were mediocre hits.

Tritt left Warner Bros. and signed to Columbia Records and released the album ‘Down the Road I Go’ in 2000. It’s single ‘Best of Intentions’ was his fifth and final number one on the Billboard.

After releasing ‘Strong Enough (2002) ‘ and ‘My Honky Tonk History (2004)’ under Columbia Records, Tritt moved on to Category 5 Records because of creative differences. He released an R&B, soul and blues-infused album, ‘The Storm’ in 2010.

Major Works

Tritt’s second album, ‘It’s All About to Change (1991)’, an album that went triple-platinum, is considered his greatest work. He received two awards for it - the Country Music Association Award and the Grammy Award.

Awards & Achievements

Throughout the 1990s, Tritt won awards for his music, like: Billboard, 4 Country Music Association Awards and 2 Grammy Awards, one for ‘The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’’ and the other for the single ‘Same Old Train’.

Personal Life & Legacy
