He is known for his perfect comic timing, impeccable wit while hosting radio and television shows, controversial satirical take on celebrities, politicians, sex, promiscuity and drugs, and a wild lifestyle. Brand lived in and out of tabloids for his innumerable relationships, heroin and alcohol addiction, and objectionable behavior for many years of his life, owning to his tormenting childhood. Childhood & Early Life

Russell Brand was born on June 4, 1975 in Essex, England, to Ronal Henry Brand and Barbara Elizabeth Nicholas. His father is a famous photographer and his parents got divorced when he was only six months old. His mother raised him single handedly.

Brand had a bit of a disgruntled childhood and then subsequent disturbed youth. He was sexually abused by his tutor when he was young and his mother contracted cancer of the breast and uterine when he was only 8.

Owing to his mother’s falling health, Brand used to live with his relatives and by the age of 14, when he just entered the teens, it was diagnosed that he suffered from bulimia nervosa. Such drastically messy formative years led to his drug abuse problems.

He attended the Grays School Media Arts College and went to the Italia Conti Academy after that in 1991 but he was expelled in his first year for the usage of illegal drugs and not paying enough attention to the studies.

Career

Brand always had a sharp personality and had a creative bend of mind and an inclination to humor and performance. In 2000, for the first time, he came out with his talent in public by doing a stand-up at the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year.

It was the same year when Brand got a big entertainment opportunity to present as a video journalist on MTV ON ‘Dancefloor Chart’. He toured various nightclubs in Ibiza and England for the show and also hosted ‘Select’.

He left MTV in 2002 and soon after made ‘RE:Brand’, a documentary and comedy television program on cultural taboos. It was Brand’s creative vision and he hosted it with Matt Morgan. He also appeared on ‘Cruise of the Gods’ and ‘White Teeth’.

Brand became famous when he hosted ‘Big Brother's Eforum’ in 2004. He also performed his one-man show in Edinburgh Festival, ‘Better Now’, in which he discussed his heroin addiction. He did another show ‘Eroticised Humour’ in the following year.

In 2005, he was flooded with opportunities to perform on the television and did BBC sitcom ‘Blessed’. Around that time, he also got a British TV debate comedy show ‘Russell Brand’s Got Issues’ on E4 Network.

‘The Russell Brand Show’ aired on BBC Radio 6 Music in 2006, a show that made him into a household name. He hosted the show along with Morgan and their timing and queer pranks became a trademark.

Brand started getting more and more hosting and presenting opportunities because of his perfectly timed humor and wit. In 2006, he presented the NME Awards and later hosted the BRIT Awards and UK leg of Live Earth in London.

Brand and Morgan’s pair was in demand as their personalities complemented each other and they did another creative project together. ‘Russell Brand on the Road’ was a documentary presented by both in 2007.

Around the same time, he got his first major role in a movie called ‘St. Trinian’s’. Also, he captured the American audience with his charm, wit and acting skills in the movie ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’.

In 2008, he hosted the MTV Video Music Awards, even though the media was wary if he would be able to capture the American audience. It was the most controversial VMAs ever as he degraded celebrities like George Bush, Jonas Brothers, etc.

In 2008, he started his own production company, ‘Vanity Projects’ and it released ‘Russell Brand Doing Life’. His American success with VMAs fetched him another hosting opportunity in 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

2010-2011 marked the beginning of a lucrative film career for Brand as he starred in the movies like: ‘Bedtime Stories’ with Adam Sandler, ‘Get Him to Greek’, a film that had him in the lead role and ‘The Tempest’.

Brand did a romantic comedy film in 2011 called ‘Arthur’, which was a remake of the 1981 film. The movie did commercially well and he was nominated for Teen Choice Awards and 32nd Golden Raspberry Awards.

His production business flourished along with his television and film career, which is why he started another production company with his friend Nik Linnen called ‘Branded Films’ in 2011. The company is established to produce films that Brand stars in.

In 2012, Brand did the film adaptation of the musical ‘Rock of Ages’.
