Early Life & Childhood
Go Kyung-pyo was born on June 11, 1990, in Seoul, South Korea. He was in love with his anime shows, his manga collection, and his western comic books since his childhood. This collectively helped him in developing his artistic side. As a result, he started drawing and sketching in elementary school and claims that he does it even now. He has also retained his childhood comic-book collection and has reportedly spent thousands in purchasing new comic books.
His sense of humor and good looks made him popular in school, especially with girls. However, his shy nature around girls prevented him from dating too many girls. While in high school, he started doing theater and fell in love with acting and other performing arts. Once he graduated from ‘Konkuk University,’ he started pursuing a career in show business.
Career
In 2010, his comic timing resonated with the makers of ‘Saturday Night Live South Korea,’ and Go made his debut with the show. He was initially hired to appear in a few episodes for the show but somehow stuck around due to the appreciation he received for his role. The makers extended his contract, and he was then all set to appear in the next two seasons of the show too.
He then ventured into films with low-budget productions. He made his film debut in 2011 with the film ‘Jungle Fish 2.’ The same year saw him appear in two more films, ‘Graduation Trip’ and ‘A Millionaire on the Run.’ His TV career too started to flourish as he appeared in the series ‘I Believe in Love’ and ‘Operation Proposal.’
His roles did not do justice to his immense talent, but considering the fact that it was just the beginning of his career, he was quite content with whatever he was being offered. However, the roles eventually got better as he progressed in his career. He soon got the chance to play a key role in the popular sitcom ‘Standby.’
Go performed brilliantly in ‘Flower Boys Next Door,’ which was another romantic comedy, and received a lot of appreciation from the audiences. The series became highly popular with the South Korean youth and so did ‘Naeil's Cantabile,’ a musical romance–drama which was adapted from a successful Japanese manga. ‘Naeil's Cantabile’ was not as successful on the critical front, but registered quite encouraging ratings from the audiences.
Go’s film career got a significant boost with a major role in one of the segments of the horror anthology ‘Horror Stories 2,’ a film which earned him a ‘Blue Dragon Film Award’ nomination. The noir thriller ‘Man on High Heels’ too became a mega success, not only at the box office but at major awards ceremonies too.
The 2014 war drama ‘The Admiral: Roaring Currents’ was also one of his most successful films. Although the film featured an ensemble cast, with both major and small-time South Korean actors, Go’s role was immensely appreciated.
Go now garnered bigger roles. All his hard work helped him get the most important role of his career. He played one of the lead characters in the series ‘Reply 1988,’ a family drama set around the northern parts of Seoul, telling the story about five families. The series was a major critical and commercial hit and most of the praises were directed toward the performances of the lead cast, including that of Go. The series premiered in 2015, and following this, Go became increasingly choosy about his roles.
Go chose his roles carefully and soon featured in a main role in the series ‘Jealousy Incarnate’ in 2016. The series revolved around workplace romance, and Go essayed the role of ‘Go Jung-won,’ an extremely rich and handsome man. His comic timing was praised along with his demeanor. Go won the ‘New Star Award’ at the ‘SBS Drama Awards’ that year. He was also nominated for the ‘Top Excellence Award’ at the same event.
Around that time, his film career too moved forward at a steady pace. He played a cameo in ‘Casa Amor: Exclusive for Ladies’ and a few lengthy roles in films such as ‘Coin Locker Girl’ and ‘The Treacherous.’ He received a nomination at that year’s ‘Baeksang Arts Awards’ for ‘Coin Locker Girl.’ He also became a part of the popular variety show ‘Infinite Challenge’ and featured as a cast member of the African edition of the popular South Korean variety show ‘Youth over Flowers.’
In 2017, he starred in the fantasy–drama series ‘Chicago Typewriter,’ a film about writers from the 1930s, when the Japanese had occupied Korea. After years of struggle, he was finally offered the role of the main lead, in the series ‘Strongest Deliveryman,’ which premiered in August 2017 and told the story of a small-time deliveryman who slowly achieves success in his professional and personal life.
