Who is Daesung?

Kang Dae-sung, known professionally as Daesung, is a South Korean singer, actor and a television host. Daesung debuted on the musical landscape with his boy band ‘Big Bang’ in 2006 and just two years later, he went solo with his debut single ‘Look at me Gwisoon’. Big Bang was a success from the very beginning and the very first single of the album ‘Since 2007’ went big. One of their songs ‘Lies’ brought them early fame, which crossed the national boundaries and brought Big Bang mega success. In the trot genre, Daesung released another solo single in 2009 titled ‘Big Hit’ and was initially worried about choosing a totally different sound from what his band did at that time, but the success of his efforts brought Daesung further fame and quite a few music awards. Daesung eventually embarked into the Japanese music scene, and released his first Japanese album in 2013, ‘D’scover’, and the album topped the Oricon Music Chart for weeks after that. He toured Japan and released some more Japanese singles and albums to cater to his fast growing fan-base in the country. He has also made a couple of appearances in films and variety shows.

Childhood & Early Life

Daesung was born on April 26, 1989 in Incheon, South Korea into a very conservative middle class family. When he got addicted to music somewhere during his elementary school and devoted more time to music than academics, this created a stir in the family, especially with his father.

Whenever the family watched something on the TV together, his father would criticize the singers all the time, thinking music was a waste of time, and this further worried Daesung, as he had cultivated the dream of becoming a musician.

This clash of ideologies with his father constituted a huge part of Daesung’s life and as a result of that, he grew into a silent kid, who although talented, wasn’t okay with opening up to anyone around him. He did Taekwando and played soccer in middle school to calm his nerves, and due to the suppressed depression, his performance in the academics went downhill. He wanted to prove his father wrong about being a musician and secretly kept practising it in order to stay in the mindset of a musician.

He attended Kyeongin High School and accidentally got introduced to some fellow struggling musicians, who would later become his band mates for the music band. He, once again, had to face the wrath of his father for getting dropped out of high school for taking out time to practice with his band. Nonetheless, he carried on with his studies and eventually cleared the entrance exam to get admission into the post modern music department of the Kyung Hee University in 2008.

Daesung auditioned for YG Entertainment and got selected, which eventually led to the formation of the band ‘Big Bang’, which debuted on television in 2006 at the YG Family 10th Anniversary concert and since then, they have travelled a long way.

Career

The freshly formed band ‘Big Bang’ made a solid debut in August 2006 with the album ‘Bigbang’ which consisted of singles such as ‘We Belong together’ and ‘A Fool’s only Dream’. The band sold more than 40,000 copies of their first single, which was great feat by any standards and set a great stage for the band to take it from there, and hit it big. The subsequent singles they released that year, although couldn’t repeat the success of the first one, but were moderately successful nonetheless.

First full length album by the band came in 2007 with the name ‘Since 2007’ and was generally well received, but did not do anything great for the young band members. But what did the trick was their first EP titled ‘Always’, which came out in the same year and managed to sweep almost all the top music charts in South Korea. Titled ‘Always’, the album’s song ‘Lies’ was on top of most Korean music charts for seven consecutive weeks, breaking some records in the process. The Mnet Korean Music Festival that year deemed the song worthy of honour for the Best Song of the Year.

The follow up EPs also became mega success and the singles ‘Last Farewell’ and ‘Day by Day’ from their two subsequent EPs became chart toppers and this was the time, when the band received great following in Japan as well.

This initial success was proving to be very hard for Daesung due to his traumatic past and the fact that his father was still not very much approving of his musical success. He developed nodules in his vocal chords, along with severe stage fright. He started worrying about his musical career, but help and support from his band-members improved his condition and that was the time when he decided to go solo.

In 2008, Daesung’s first solo single ‘Look at me Gwisoon’ came into the market. The song was from trot genre and became fairly successful. In the same year, Daesung started appearing on TV and became a permanent cast member of the popular variety show ‘Family Outing’ and also became host of a music show ‘Show! Music Core’.

In 2009, he released ‘Big Hit’, his second solo trot single and in December that year, he reconnected with his band once again to join them in the Dream Concert.

In early 2010, Daesung released his third single titled ‘Cotton Candy’ and also became a cast member of the musical drama ‘What’s Up’, eventually composing the OST of the drama with the song ‘Lunatic’.

In March 2012, he made his comeback with his band with a mini-album titled ‘Alive’ and embarked into concerts with his band members in Japan and South Korea. After the huge response and love from his Japanese fans, he started working on his very first Japanese album.

In February 2013, he released his very first Japanese album titled ‘D’scover’, which had the covers of famous Japanese songs along with a few original tracks. The album was a big hit in Japan and debuted at the second spot in the Oricon Music charts. The success of album was followed by a mega Japanese concert tour, which included 18 cities.

His success in Japan continued with his second album ‘D’solve’ in 2014, which topped the list in the Oricon charts. And Daesung went again on a massive Japanese tour, covering 17 venues in 9 cities.

This success was followed with two more Japanese mini albums ‘Delight’ and ‘D-Day’, along with a number of concerts around South Korea and Japan.

Personal Life

In May 2011, Deasung was involved in a serious car accident in which a motorcyclist was killed. This took a bad toll on his career and although he was freed of all charges, he had to halt his public activities with his band for some time.

Daesung is a Christian and a highly religious man, who believes that faith that he has on god, has played a great role in shaping up his career and success.

Daesung has dated several women but has also admitted that he usually treats them badly. Presently he is single, and he is rumoured to have dated Kang Ji-young for quite some time.
