Childhood & Early Life

Tommy Lee Jones was born to Clyde C. Jones, an oil field worker and Lucille Marie, an entrepreneur, police officer and teacher, in San Saba, Texas.

He studied at Robert E. Lee High School and St. Mark’s School of Texas before attending Harvard University on a need-based scholarship. During his school years, he was actively involved in playing football and also participated in a number of school dramas and productions.

During his stay in Harvard, he played for the 1968 Harvard varsity team and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English the following year.

Career

He moved to New York City with the dream of becoming an actor and made his Broadway debut in 1969 with ‘A Patriot for Me’. The following year, he landed his first film role in ‘Love Story’.

In 1971, he acted along with Sid Caesar and Carol Channing in the Broadway production, ‘Four on a Garden’. He also starred in the ABC show, ‘One Life to Live’ as Dr. Mark Toland, a role he played till 1975.

He landed his first protagonist role with ‘Jackson County Jail’ in 1976 and worked in the ‘Rolling Thunder’ the following year. He was lauded for his acting skills and started getting more offers for more serious roles.

In 1981, he starred in ‘Back Roads’ along with Sally Fields and two years later, he was presented an important award for his performance as Gary Gilmore in ‘The Executioner’s Song’.

In 1989, he was once again nominated for a prestigious award for his role as ‘Woodrow F. Call’ in the mini-series, ‘Lonesome Dove’, based on a best-seller of the same title.

He catapulted to fame with his most acclaimed role yet, co-starring with Harrison Ford in the blockbuster hit, ‘The Fugitive’ (1993). Through the 1990s, he starred in several hit movies including ‘Men in Black’, ‘JFK’ and ‘Batman Forever’.

In 2000, he co-starred with director Clint Eastwood in ‘Space Cowboys’, where he played the role of a retired pilot on a space rescue mission.

In 2005, he directed ‘The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada’, the first of his directorial ventures, which was also showcased at the Cannes Film Festival.

Since 2006, he has been serving as the official spokesperson for ‘Suntory’, a Japanese brewing company and has appeared in a number of Suntory’s advertisements.

His waning film career resurged with two hit performances in ‘No Country for Old Men’ and ‘In the Valley of Elah’ in 2007.

In 2010, he was cast in the drama, ‘The Company Men’ along with Ben Affleck, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He also landed a role in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’.

2012 was a very important year for Jones as he returned with his critically-acclaimed role as ‘Agent K’ in ‘Men in Black 3’ and was also cast in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’.
