New M-Code Solution for Military GPS

ADVA and Brandywine Communications have collaborated to develop a revolutionary integrated solution for military applications that provides secure, resilient, and assured PNT services with six 9’s reliability. The new solution is based on Oscilloquartz’s timing technology, and it integrates Brandywine’s M-Code receiver with ADVA’s OSA 5422 grandmaster clock. The single-box device features multi-source backup capabilities and sync assurance capabilities that continuously monitor the timing system’s performance and take immediate corrective action when necessary. The integrated technology is expected to be announced by the middle of the year, and certification with the Department of Defense will follow. M-Code, the encrypted GPS signal resistant to jamming, will eventually replace the legacy SAASM receivers. There are hundreds of thousands of SAASM military receivers that need upgrading to M-Code, and a unified network is required to connect multi-domain weapons, sensors, and radars that need to be protected in terms of PNT.

GPS, despite being encrypted, is vulnerable to spoofing and jamming, and it is not reliable enough to be a single point of failure in critical PNT services, particularly military applications. Therefore, ADVA and Brandywine Communications have teamed up to create a new solution that provides secure, resilient, and assured PNT services with six 9’s reliability, a level of precision required for military operations.

The collaboration involves integrating Brandywine’s M-Code receiver with ADVA’s OSA 5422 grandmaster clock to produce a solution robust enough for military edge applications. The technology is expected to be announced later this year and will be based on Oscilloquartz’s timing technology, which has integrated M-Code capabilities.

The technology, like OSA 5422, will support 1Gbit/s and 10Gbit/s interfaces, provide GNSS assurance capabilities, and backup through Oscilloquartz’s assured PNT (aPNT+™) technology.

According to Nino De Falcis, senior director of business development at Oscilloquartz, ADVA, they wanted to provide an offering into the defense environment, and partnering with Brandywine addressed the fact that they didn’t have a grandmaster clock technology, while Brandywine didn’t have the M-Code technology.

The collaboration aims to replace the legacy SAASM receivers with M-Code, an encrypted GPS signal resistant to jamming, which the US military uses. With the recent launch of the last segment of GPS III satellites, the entire constellation is now ready to deploy M-Code. All the military’s infrastructure, including tanks, hummers, weapons, and missiles, must eventually be equipped with M-Code receivers, as well as the timing capability that the grandmaster clock provides once the signal is received and encrypted.

The integration of M-Code into the grandmaster clock provides a start-of-the-art timing device with intelligence, accommodating multiple sources such as M-Code, PTP, and standalone GPS. The assured PNT inside the clock verifies as many sources of opportunity as possible and switches from one source to another in the event of jamming, spoofing, or attacks. This includes sources of opportunity like LEO PNT, as Adtran recently entered into a partnership with Satelles to add STL capabilities to its Oscilloquartz synchronization products.

The OSA 5422’s long holdover and PTP backup enable it to maintain accurate timing even in the event of M-Code disruption. The solution also features multi-source backup capabilities that ensure that M-Code outages do not disrupt synchronization and provides sync assurance capabilities that continuously monitor the performance of the timing system and take immediate corrective action when needed.

The announcement about the partnership states that the solution is critical for pressurized defense networks that need to operate in various difficult environments.

Certification and What’s Next

The integrated technology is expected to be announced by the middle of the year, and the next step is to certify it with the Department of Defense. Brandywine’s role in the partnership is to ensure that the device is certified.
