Paul Scholes is a well-known retired English footballer who played for Manchester United throughout his whole career. He played for the English National Football Team as well. One of the most decorated and successful footballers in history, he is currently a co-owner of Salford City Football Club and a television executive for BT Sport. Born in Salford, in Greater Manchester, he was a proficient cricketer as well as a footballer since his school days. After being spotted by a scout, he first got his opportunity to train with Manchester United at the age of 14. His professional career began in 1993. He played for the team for a total of nineteen years. He has represented the national team as well and took part in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, as well as the UEFA Euro 2000 and Euro 2004. For his amazing skills, he is regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation. Childhood & Early Life

Paul Scholes was born on 16th November 1974, at Hope Hospital in Salford, Greater Manchester in the UK to Stetard and Marina Scholes.

Interested in sports from a young age, he was one of the best trainees at the Manchester United youth academy. He began his early career by playing for the youth team of the club, also taking part in different championships. He began training with Manchester United while he was only fourteen.

Club Career

Paul Scholes became a professional member of Manchester United on July 23, 1993, and shortly after, during the 1994-95 season, he made his breakthrough into the senior squad.

In his first professional game on 21 September 1994, in the Football League Cup, his team faced Port Vale. The match ended in a 2-1 victory for the United. Both goals were scored by Scholes himself.

He made his league debut after three days in a game against Ipswich Town. United lost 3-2, though Scholes played quite and even scored a goal. His performance stayed consistent throughout the season and he also scored several goals for the team.

Scholes continued playing for the team and his performance in 1995-1996 was remarkable. He scored a total of 14 goals in all competitions. In 1996-97 his amazing performance won him a Premier League Winners medal. In 1998-99, he played a key role in Manchester United's success in the Premier League, FA Cup, as well as UEFA Champions League.

He continued playing for United until he announced his retirement in 2011. Till then, he had scored a total of 102 goals for his team. Though he had made the decision to retire, he was convinced to play one more season. Finally in May 2013, he finished his remarkable career following the 2012-13 season.

Currently he is the owner of the Salford City Football team. He is also involved with BT Sport as a television executive. He is also columnist for ‘The Independent.’

He has endorsed the sportswear company Nike appearing in several commercials. He was also featured in the FIFA video game series by EA Sports.

International Career

He made his international debut in 1997, in a match against South Africa, where his team had a 2-1 friendly win. Soon he was selected to represent the English team in the 1998 World Cup.

During England’s first group match in the 1998 World Cup tournament, which was against Tunisia, his team gained a 2-0 victory with one goal scored by Scholes himself. Though he put up a brilliant performance, England was eventually eliminated from the tournament in the knock out round after being beaten by Argentina.

He represented the national team again in the 2002 World Cup. He displayed a brilliant performance, and helped the team reach the quarter finals, where they faced a 1-2 loss against Brazil, the team that eventually won the World Cup that year.

Though he was offered a chance to play again for the team in the 2010 World Cup, he rejected the offer saying that he wished to spend more time with his family. However, he later regretted his decision.

Awards & Achievements

Throughout his career, Paul Scholes has led Manchester United to win several tournaments such as the UFFA European Under-18 Football Championship in 1993 and the Tournoi de France in 1997. He led the English team to win the Intercontinental Cup in 1999 and FIFA Club World Cup in 2008.

Some of the individual awards he has won are the ‘Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year’ in the 1992-93 season and the ‘FWA Tribute Award’ in 2012.

Personal Life

Paul Scholes is married to his childhood sweetheart Claire. The marriage took place in the year 1999. They have a daughter and two sons. Unfortunately, one of the kids suffers from autism.

His son Aaron Scholes chose to follow in his father’s footsteps. As of August 2011, he was known to have played for the Stalybridge Celtic under-12 football team.

Scholes suffers from asthma as well as a knee condition known as Osgood Schlatter disease.
