Taisho Sugo, better known by his stage name Masaki Suda, is a popular Japanese actor and musician from Osaka who is well known for his role in the Kamen Rider series and several other hit movies. He began his career by appearing in many commercials and TV dramas, which made him a popular face. He also has forayed into singing and made his debut as a singer in 2017 and eventually launched his own album in 2018. His single has also reached the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart. His most popular movies include ‘The Backwater’, ‘Assassination Classroom’ and ‘The Light Shines Only There’. These movies were both commercially and critically successful. Career

Masaki Suda debuted as an actor in the popular Kamen Rider franchise. He was cast as Philip in ‘Kamen Rider W’ aired from 2009 to 2010. The sequel to ‘Kamen Rider W’ titled ‘Futo Detective’ was released as manga serials in 2017. Suda continued his role in the popular franchise till 2012. He was roped in as the lead actor for ‘The Backwater’ in 2013. This drama film was based on an award-winning novel by Shinya Tanaka and was directed by Shinji Aoyama. The movie went on to win the Best Film award at the 2013 Locarno International Film Festival. His other movies in the same year include ‘Girl in the Sunny Place’ and ‘Daily Lives of High School Boys’.

In 2014, he was part of ‘Princess Jellyfish’, a live-action movie adaptation of the manga written by Akiko Higashimura. This role involved Masaki Suda to cross dress as a man, a role for which he lost over 10 kilos and regularly visited salons to learn and adapt mannerisms of women. He also acted in ‘The Light Shines Only There’, a Japanese drama directed by Mipo O and it was the official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards. His roles fetched him the Japan Academy Prize for Newcomer of the Year as well as the Best Supporting Actor award at the Nikkan Sports Drama Grand Prix.

In 2015, he acted in the comedy live-action movie ‘Assassination Classroom’ where he portrayed Karma Akabane, a student. The sequel to this movie titled ‘Assassination Classroom: Graduation’ was released in 2016. Both these movies were commercially successful.

2016 proved to be an important year for Suda as he starred in eight films and four TV series in the year. His most prominent movies in the year include Tatsushi Ōmori’s ‘Setoutsumi’, Shinsuke Sato’s ‘Death Note: Light Up the New World’ and Yuki Yamato’s ‘Oboreru Knife’. He won the coveted Elan d'or Award in 2016.

In 2017, he was seen in the movies ‘Gintama’, ‘Teiichi: Battle of Supreme High’, ‘Fireworks:s Should We See It from the Side or the Bottom?’ and ‘Hibana: Spark’. He was also featured in Kenshi Yonezu's music video for his single ‘Haiiro to Ao’ (2017) and this digital release reached 1 million views within 24 hours of its release. Soon, Suda also branched out as a musician himself when he first released his debut single ‘Mita koto mo nai keshiki’ in 2017. The song went on to chart at #3 in the Japanese Hot 100 chart; he subsequently released his next single ‘When the Rain Stops’ in the same year and the song ranked at number 13 in the Japanese Hot 100.

He soon launch his first album ‘Play’ in March 2018. His releases in 2018 include Haru Yoshida ‘My Little Monster’ and the sequel to ‘Gintama’ titled ‘Gintama 2’. He is also part of the Japanese drama ‘Todome no Kiss’ which is currently released by Hulu. His consistency and talent has been recognized with several awards, including the Japan Academy Prize twice, Kinema Junpo Award, Nikkan Sports Film Award, and Tokyo Sports Film Award.
