Kate del Castillo is a well-known Mexican actress, who began her acting career at the tender age of six. She worked in a number of films and television shows in her early career and played her breakthrough role in 1991 in the TV series ‘Muchachitas’. Eventually she rose to become one of the most famous actresses in Mexico. The daughter of a renowned Mexican soap opera actor, she then embarked on an international tour for the play ‘Cartas de Amor’ (Love Letters). She soon became famous to such an extent that the ‘People’ magazine (Spanish) listed her as one of the ‘50 most beautiful people in the world’. The star has also done a handful of American films and TV series, such as ‘The 33,’ ‘Jane the Virgin’ and ‘American Family,’ to name a few. Kate del Castillo has also graced the glossy covers of prestigious Spanish magazines. Apart from her acting work, she is also known for her controversial involvement with certain notorious figures. In October 2015, she helped broker a meeting between actor Sean Penn and Mexican drug lord El Chapo which led her into considerable trouble with the Mexican government.

Childhood & Early Life

Kate Del Castillo was born on October 23, 1972 in Mexico City, Mexico. She is the daughter of renowned Mexican star Eric del Castillo. Her mother’s name is Kate Trillo.

She has a sister Verónica del Castillo, a journalist, and a half-brother from her father’s side.

Career

Kate Del Castillo began her career as a child. In 1978, she made her acting debut in the film ‘The Last Escape’.

The actress got recognition after appearing in ‘Muchachitas’ in 1991, a television series that aired in several Latin American countries. Her performance in the show made her a full-fledged star.

In 1994, del Castillo was signed for the role of ‘Narda’ for the soap opera ‘Imperio de cristal’, produced by Carlos Sotomayor.

She was cast for an American television series ‘American Family’ alongside Edward James Olmos in 2002. Then the star embarked on an international tour for her play ‘Cartas de Amor’ (Love Letters) the following year.

In 2005, she appeared in the movie ‘American Visa’. Her role in the film as a Bolivian dancer earned her several critical reviews apart from various accolades. She starred in ‘Colosio: El asesinato’ in the year 2012. This flick was based on the assassination of Mexican presidential nominee Luis Donaldo Colosio

In 2011, Kate del Castillo portrayed the role of ‘Queen of the South’ Teresa Mendoza in the prime-time TV series ‘La Reina del Sur’. This TV series of NBC/Universal was adapted from one of the best-selling novels of the Spanish novelist Arturo Perez-Reverte. The final episode of the series raked in 4.2 million viewers, making it an extremely successful TV series.

The Mexican actress has appeared in several advertising campaigns for high-end brands like Ford and L'Oréal.

Connection with El Chapo Guzmán

On 9 January 2012, Kate del Castillo posted on her social networking account an essay talking about the social issues in Mexico that included a controversial request to El Chapo Guzmán, a notorious Mexican drug lord.

In 2014, the actress was contacted by Guzmán’s lawyer regarding the production of a film on Guzmán’s life. Due to this, orders were given for inspection regarding the involvement of the actress with the drug lord.

Kate del Castillo also brokered an interview between Guzmán and American actor Sean Penn. Later on, CISEN released some photographs of the actress at the meetings with El Chapo Guzmán’s lawyer. This again placed the actress under surveillance.

On 5 February 2016, a judge of the Mexico court issued a detain-and-interrogate order on the star. The order had been issued after del Castillo did not bother to appear before the Mexican prosecutors.

Kate del Castillo was once in a romantic relation with Emilio Azcarraga Jean, son of Emilio Azcárraga Milmo, CEO of the ‘Televisa Grup,’ one of the pioneer mass media companies of Latin America.

On 3 February 2001, the actress married football player Luis García. However, the couple split in September 2004.

Del Castillo married Aarón Díaz (actor, singer and model) in August 2009 in Las Vegas. Later on, it was revealed that the couple was separating.
