Who is Elvira Lindo?
Elvira Lindo is a Spanish scriptwriter, journalist and author of both adult and children's books. She is a frequent contributor to international periodical El Pais and is well-known for her eight book children's series Manolito Gafotas. She currently spends half of the year in New York City with her husband, Antonio Munoz Molina, who is also a celebrated Spanish language author. After graduating from secondary school, she studied journalism while working as a broadcaster at the National Radio of Spain. Here, she created her most beloved character, Manolito Gafotas. Lindo has also written several screenplays including the film adaptation of Manolito Gafotas. She acted in supporting roles for a number of her screenplays, numerous television series and penned two stage plays. Childhood & Early Life
Elvira Lindo was born in Cadiz, Spain, on January 23, 1962 to Antonia and Manuel Lindo. Her family lived in several different places of Spain before moving to Madrid when she was twelve.
Her family’s nomadic lifestyle can be attributed to her father, Manuel Lindo, who was an auditor for the company Dragados y Construcciones.
Career
She studied journalism at the Complutense University of Madrid after secondary school, but in 1981 she quit college to work for the Spanish National Radio.
It was while working for the radio station that Elvira Lindo first created the character of Manolito Gafotas, a child from a working class neighborhood in Madrid. She wrote weekly scripts for stories about Manolito and voiced the character herself.
She accepted the position of an announcer for Spanish National Radio in the city of Malaga before moving back to Madrid a year later.
In 1991, she began writing scripts and acting in sketch comedies on Spanish Television.
Taking a break from television to focus on writing, Elvira Lindo published eight children's novels featuring the protagonist Manolito Gafotas between 1994 and 2012.
Lindo's first theatrical script, ‘The Law of the Jungle’, was performed in 1996. Despite her prolific film and literary career, she wouldn't produce another play for nearly ten years.
Over the span of two years (1996 to 1997), she wrote seven books featuring Olivia, a spunky girl constantly caught up in misadventures.
Her first screenplay was for the movie ‘The First Night of My Life’, which was screened in all major theaters in Spain as well as several festivals in Argentina, Italy and the United States. She also played a small part in the movie.
The year 1998 was a great one for Elvira Lindo as she started writing books for adults, starting with ‘The Other Neighborhood’ as well as a screen adaptation of Manolito Gafotas.
She began writing a bi-weekly column in El Pais newspaper in January 2000.
Between 2000 and 2014, she produced six more screenplays and acted in six movies.
Her major adult novels include Algo Más Inesperado Que la Muerte, Una Palabra Tuya, Lo Que Me Queda Por Vivir and Don de Gentes.
