Who is Cheryl Tiegs?

Cheryl Rae Tiegs is an American supermodel, actress, and fashion designer who became a pop culture icon in the 1970s. She garnered massive popularity for her multiple appearances on the covers of ‘Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue’ and for the iconic 1978 “Pink Bikini” poster. A Minnesota native, Tiegs entered the fashion industry while she was still a high school student. She got her big break at 17 when she landed the opportunity to be on the cover of ‘Glamour’ magazine. In the same year, she was also featured on the covers of ‘Seventeen’ and ‘Elle,’ and later, on ‘Vogue’ and ‘Harper's Bazaar.’ After ruling the modeling industry for a decade as unarguably its greatest star, she entered a new phase in her career in 1980 when she launched a signature line of clothing and accessories for Sears. It turned out to be a huge success, accumulating nearly a billion dollars in sales within a decade. In the following years, she also successfully established her own sportswear brand and a line of wigs and hair accessories for Revlon. In 1986, she made her screen debut in the TV series ‘’Moonlighting’. She has since appeared as a contestant on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ and had a significant role in the film ‘Sharknado: The 4th Awakens.’ Over the years, Tiegs has supported several charitable causes, including the Farrah Fawcett Foundation, City of Hope, and Planned Parenthood.

Childhood & Early Life

Born on September 25, 1947, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, US, Cheryl Tiegs is the daughter of Phyllis and Theodore Tiegs. Her father was an auto-assembly lineman turned funeral director. When she was five years old, she and her family relocated to Alhambra, California, where she attended Alhambra High School.

In her senior year, she was chosen to pose for bathing suit manufacturer Cole of California. The advertisement, which was printed in ‘Seventeen,’ helped her start her modeling career.

Career & Later Life

The editorial staff at ‘Glamour’ became interested in Cheryl Tiegs after seeing the bathing suit advertisement. They reached out to her and without even having a traditional in-person meeting, hired her for a shoot in Saint Thomas with Ali MacGraw, which later led to her appearance on the cover of the magazine. She followed it up with several other cover appearances on magazines like ‘Seventeen,’ ‘Elle,’ ‘Vogue’ and ‘Harper's Bazaar.’

She became the first model ever to be featured on the cover of ‘Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue’ twice. In 1978, she was featured on the ‘Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue’ cover in a pink bikini. She also appeared in a fishnet swimsuit for the magazine that year. Both of these iconic appearances garnered her international recognition.

She was also featured on the cover of ‘People’ four times and ‘Time’ three times, including the "All-American Model" cover story in 1978.

An Emmy-winning documentary titled ‘Africa: End of the Game’ was made, chronicling their journey.

For the next few years, she shuttled between America and Hog Ranch in Kenya. The LOOK magazine named her “The New African Queen” in 1979. A year later, she posed for the cover of ‘Outside.’

As with most ventures in her life, she set the precedent here as well: she was the first supermodel to invest in retail. In 1989, with a sales collection nearing $1 billion, her brand helped Sears make a financial turnaround.

She launched Cheryl Tiegs Sportswear in 1995 and made multiple appearances on QVC to market the product. In collaboration with Revlon, she launched a line of wigs and hair accessories.

In 2001, at 54 years old, she was featured in a bikini on the cover of ‘More’ and received much praise for defying ageism in the fashion industry.

As an actress, she made her debut in ABC’s comedy-drama ‘Moonlighting’ in 1986. Her next appearance was as Lola Valenti in 1995 in an episode of NBC’s ‘The John Larroquette Show’. She has also made guest appearances in NBC’s ‘Just Shoot Me!’ (2000-2002) and the web series ‘Childrens Hospital’ (2015).

Her big screen debut occurred in the 2003 American independent art house drama film ‘The Brown Bunny’. In the 2016 comedy-horror film ‘Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens’, she was cast as Raye Shepard, the mother of Fin Shepard, the male protagonist of the film series.

In Seth MacFarlane’s ‘Family Guy’, she portrayed herself in two episodes, ‘Tiegs for Two’ (2011) and ‘Valentine's Day in Quahog’ (2013). In the season 12 (2012) of ‘Celebrity Apprentice’, she appeared as a contestant, with proceeds from her winnings going to the Farrah Fawcett Foundation. She has also hosted Travel Channel’s ‘Pathfinders: Exotic Journeys’ and was one of the judges on ABC’s ‘True Beauty’.

She also serves as the spokesperson for City of Hope, a private, not-for-profit clinical research centre, hospital and graduate medical school in Duarte, California, as well as the ambassador for Planned Parenthood. Tiegs has also lent her support to causes such as the Macula Vision Research Foundation and I Am Waters.

A long-time environment conservationist, she went on an expedition to the Arctic to know more about the effects of global warming.
