Buster Posey is an American professional baseball player, who plays for the ‘San Francisco Giants.’ He got his nickname from his father, who also played professional baseball. During his college days he played for Florida State Seminoles at shortstop as a freshman and played as a catcher during sophomore. While he was still in college he started playing as shortstop for ‘Yamouth Dennis Red Sox’ and later played as a catcher for the team. He was drafted by the ‘San Francisco Giants’ and assigned to their Class A Advanced affiliate to play in the ‘California League’ and got promoted to the Class AAA team called ‘Fresno Grizzlies’ within a year. He made his major league debut as a replacement for ‘Bengie Molina’ in a match against the ‘Los Angeles Dodgers.’ Posey has played six ‘All- Star’ games and three ‘World Series Championships’ with a batting average of .307, 133 home runs, and 634 runs batted in. Childhood & Early Life

Buster Posey was born Gerald Posey III on March 27, 1987, in Leesburg, Georgia, US, to Gerald and Traci Dempsey. He is the eldest of four children. He studied at Lee County High School where he played football, soccer, basketball, and baseball.

Baseball was his main game in which he was a pitcher and shortstop for his high school team. He was one of the team’s star players and set records in batting average and runs batted in (RBI). He also set a school record with 14 home runs in his senior year. He was named ‘Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year,’ ‘Louisville Slugger State Player of the Year,’ ‘EA Sports All-American,’ and ‘Baseball America All-American’ in his final year.

He was an intelligent student and ranked fourth in a class of 302. Despite being drafted by the ‘Los Angeles Angeles,’ he decided to attend college than join full- time professional baseball.

During his college days he played for ‘Florida State Seminoles’ at shortstop as a freshman. He went on to the catcher’s position as a sophomore and was declared runners up for the ‘Johnny Bench Award’ for catching. He won the award in his final year in college. He was also awarded the ‘Dick Howser Trophy’ and ‘Golden Spike Award’ at the end of his final year.

While still in college, he started playing as shortstop for ‘Yamouth Dennis Red Sox’ and won the ‘Cape Cod Baseball League.’ He later started playing catcher for the team. In 2008, he was considered to be the best catcher by ‘Baseball America’ for the ‘Major League Baseball’ draft.

Career

In August 2008, he was drafted by the ‘San Francisco Giants’ and assigned to their Class A Advanced affiliate to play in the ‘California League.’ Within a year he was promoted to the Giant’s Class AAA team, ‘Fresno Grizzlies,’ to play in the ‘Pacific Coast League.’

He made his major league debut as a replacement for Bengie Molina in a match against the ‘Los Angeles Dodgers,’ in September 2009. He was ranked as one of the top prospects of the ‘San Francisco Giants’ by the end of the year.

He hit his first major league home run against Aaron Harang of the ‘Cincinnati Reds’ and became the opening catcher for the ‘Giants,’ in 2010. He hit his first grand slam against the ‘Milwaukee Brewers’ that year and earned himself the position of the clean-up hitter of his team. He was named ‘National League Rookie of the Year’ and included as the catcher for the ‘Baseball America All-Rookie Team.’

Posey was injured in a collision with Scott Cousins of the ‘Florida Marlins’ due to which he had to undergo surgery and miss out on most of the 2011 season. He returned to the field in mid-2012 to play in the ‘Major League Baseball All-Star Game.’ ‘Baseball Writers’ Association of America’ named him the ‘National League Most Valuable Player’ at the end of the season.

In 2013, his batting saw a downswing but he made up with a grand slam against the ‘Arizona Diamondbacks’ in the following season. In 2015, he hit another grand slam against the ‘Los Angeles Dodgers’ and stole a base to become the first ‘San Francisco Giants’ catcher to achieve the feat in 112 years. He also won the ‘Wilson Defensive Player of the Year’ and ‘National League Silver Slugger’ award that year.

He was selected to play as catcher for his fourth ‘MLB All-Star Game’ in 2016. He won his first ‘Gold Glove Award’ that year.

During the first inning in San Francisco's 2017 home opener, he was hit in the helmet by a pitch from Taijuan Walker of Arizona Diamondbacks. He looked okay after getting medical but as a matter of precaution, he was placed on a week's concussion disabled list. However, he remained in good form and was named starting catcher for the ‘MLB All-Star Game’ for the third consecutive year.

In 2018, though he was named for the ‘MLB All-Star Game’ but could not play due to a hip injury for which he had to undergo surgery.
