Childhood & Early Life

Alain Despereaux Moussi was born on March 29, 1981, in Libreville, Gabon, to Jean and Rita Moussi. His father is Lebanese and his mother is of French–Canadian ancestry. His father was a professor of math, who was working on a contract in Gabon. He was raised with his sister and brother in a close-knit family and spent the first two years of his life between Libreville and Ivory Coast, before his family migrated to Ottawa, Canada.

He attended the ‘Collège catholique Samuel-Genest’ in Canada, where he took an active part in sports. Moussi was an outdoor kid who was interested in physical fitness and martial arts. He was greatly influenced by Jean-Claude Van Damme and his stunts in the movie ‘Bloodsport’ and wanted to become like him when he grew up. At the age of 7, he started his training in martial arts by leaning the Japanese art of jujutsu under the Canadian legend John Therien. Soon, he started learning kickboxing from the renowned champion Jean-Yves Theriault.

Moussi was serious about making a career out of martial arts and trained in Brazillian jiu-jitsu under Carlos Machado, ultimately qualifying for a black belt by the time he was 18 years old. However, success did not come easy. Alain had to put in several hours of hard work every day to tone up his body. He also had to follow a strict diet and maintain a disciplined lifestyle. His father encouraged him to fulfil his dream by giving him full financial support.

In 1999, he teamed up with his training partner, Robert Ladouceur, and started conducting demonstrations to display his martial-arts skills in Canada and the US. Their shows became popular and helped him gain an entry into the entertainment world.

Alain and his friends from the martial-arts class also made an amateur movie called ‘NX Files,’ which showcased their skills. The movie gained a large subscription and fan following. This prompted them to upload 20 episodes of their show.

Career

Having earned his black belt and displayed his talent on the mat, Moussi went on to work with the film industry as a stuntman. His first exposure in the entertainment world was as a double for Henry Cavill, who played the lead role in the movie ‘Immortals.’ He impressed the directors and fight choreographers with his expertise and got the opportunity to act as a double for Hugh Jackman in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ for Travis Fimmel in ‘Warcraft,’ and for Jai Courtney in ‘Suicide Squad.’

In 2011, while shooting for a stunt scene in the movie ‘Wings of the Dragon,’ he was noticed by producer and director Dimitri Logothetis, who invited him to demonstrate his skills. The director was so impressed that he offered to give him the lead role in his next film. This proved to be his dream-come-true offer.

In 2014, it was announced at the ‘Cannes Film Festival’ that Moussi would be given his first actual lead role in the movie ‘Kickboxer: Vengeance,’ which was a sequel to the 1989 movie ‘Kickboxer’ that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme. In the sequel, Moussi played the role of a young boy who trains under Jean-Claude Van Damme to avenge his brother’s death. The success of the movie can be gauged by the fact that it was followed by two more sequels, ‘Kickboxer: Retaliation’ and ‘Kickboxer: Syndicate.’

He has starred alongside fighting legends such as Mike Tyson, Roy Nelson, Brian Shaw, and Rigan Machado. He has also appeared in the web series ‘Street Fighter: Resurrection,’ in which he plays the role of a martial-arts expert named ‘Charlie Nash.’ Moussi also appeared in the movie ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past.’

Presently, he is working as a fight coordinator for the movie ‘Kickboxer Trilogy: Kickboxer Armageddon’ and is developing a new martial-arts action science-fiction franchise called ‘Jiu Jitsu,’ which is likely to be a cross between ‘Mortal Kombat’ and ‘Predator.’
