Who is Saif Ali Khan?

Saif Ali Khan is an Indian film actor, who came to prominence with the film ‘Dil Chahta Hai’. Although he has played a variety of roles in high-profile productions as well as with independent filmmakers, he has made a niche for himself in romantic comedy films. Debuting with an unsuccessful film ‘Parampara’, he later achieved success with commercially hit films like ‘Yeh Dillagi’, ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’, and ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’. However, the industry saw a mature and talented actor in him in films like ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, ‘Hum Tum’, ‘Omkara’, and ‘Parineeta’, which earned him several awards, including the prestigious National Film Award for Best Actor. One of the highest-paid actors in Bollywood, Saif has shown his versatility in films like ‘Ek Hasina Thi’, ‘Parineeta’, ‘Being Cyrus’, ‘Omkara’, and many others. A private person as the media describes him, Saif takes interest in many things other than films, and is known to converse well on any given topic—from philosophy to politics and from books to music. Based on his income and popularity, he was featured on Forbes India's ‘Celebrity 100’ list for five consecutive years. The UK magazine ‘Eastern Eye' has also featured him in their ‘World's Sexiest Asian Men’ list for three years.

Childhood & Early Life

Saif Ali Khan was born on August 16, 1970, in New Delhi, to actress Sharmila Tagore and her cricketer husband Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who was a former captain of the Indian cricket team. He has two younger sisters—Saba and Soha, the latter being an actress, too.

He attended The Lawrence School, Sanawar in Himachal Pradesh, India, for a few years, before he was sent to Lockers Park School in Hertfordshire, the UK, at the age of nine.

After he graduated from Winchester College, the UK, he returned to India. Soon he got an offer to model for Gwalior Suiting’s advertisement, which brought him to the limelight. He was also cast in a film, which did not see the light of the day, but definitely instilled the idea in his mind to pursue a career in films.

Career

Although Saif Ali Khan was excited to relocate to Mumbai and start his career in the film industry, he was initially termed as “arrogant” and “unprofessional” by his directors. In 1991, he was cast as the lead in ‘Bekhudi’, but soon he was replaced by another actor due to his “unprofessionalism”.

In 1993, director Yash Chopra cast him in ‘Parampara’, but unfortunately the film failed at the box office. His next two films—‘Aashiq Awara’ and ‘Pehchaan’, both in 1993, also proved to be unsuccessful.

In 1994, with ‘Yeh Dillagi’ and ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’, Saif hit the bull’s eye, and was recognized by the industry and the media as a commercially successful actor.

In the next four years, all his 11 films were critically and commercially unsuccessful. By the end of the 1990s, his career had been almost ruined with these flop projects, and the industry and critics almost wrote him off as an actor.

The year 1999, however, proved to be a successful year for him, when his career prospects began to improve. While ‘Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan’ and ‘Aarzoo’ earned a little success, ‘Kachche Dhaage’ was his first major commercial success after ‘Main Khiladi…’ The year closed with ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’, which proved to be his "morale-booster".

His movie ‘Kya Kehna’ in 2000 was a hit. He played a negative role in the film, which the critics termed as the “sunny and bright” side of the movie.

In 2001, the coming-of-age dramedy ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ proved to be a breakthrough in his career. Critics applauded him as a mature and talented actor. The film received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

The 2003 romantic film ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ was marked as his "landmark" film. It was a globally successful film, and Saif’s performance was critically acclaimed.

In 2004, he had another hit film to his credit—‘Hum Tum’—where he showed his skills by giving a mature and nuanced performance. To avoid being typecast as a romantic actor, he took up a negative role in the thriller ‘Ek Hasina Thi’.

In 2005, his role in ‘Parineeta’ garnered critical acclaim. Critics wrote that he has gradually proved himself as an actor with substance. In the same year, he was featured in ‘Salaam Namaste’, which was a hit film worldwide.

His role as a protagonist in the art film ‘Being Cyrus’ in 2006, garnered high praises for him. His portrayal as 'Langda' Tyagi in the film ‘Omkara’ the same year was applauded as “outstanding”.

In 2007, he appeared in the epic film ‘Eklavya: The Royal Guard’, which was selected as India's official entry to the Oscars. With this role, Saif’s growth as an actor was recognized once again.

He tasted massive success with the 2008 thriller ‘Race’, which was one of the biggest hits worldwide. He was praised for making the best impression with the least dialogues.

In 2009, he established his production house ‘Illuminati Films’ with producer Dinesh Vijan. Its first production was ‘Love Aaj Kal’, with Saif in the lead. It was a major commercial and critical success. He played the role of a terrorist in ‘Kurbaan’, which did not do well commercially even though Saif’s performance was critically applauded.

The controversial film ‘Aarakshan’ in 2011, where he played the role of a rebellious student, earned him critical acclaim. In 2012, he produced his film ‘Agent Vinod’, which did not perform well at the box office. His next production, ‘Cocktail’, starring himself, was a financial success.

With a few unsuccessful films in the period 2012-15, and a year-long absence from acting in 2016, he accepted a negative role in ‘Rangoon’ in 2017. Although the film was not received well, his performance was praised.

In 2017, his performance in ‘Chef’ received positive reviews though the film proved to be a disaster. As of November 2017, he has four films at various stages of production. While he has completed filming ‘Kaalakaandi’, he is currently shooting for ‘Baazaar’, and ‘Sacred Games’. He will also portray an Afghan warrior in ‘Soorma’.

Major Works

Saif Ali Khan’s performance in ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was praised as "excellent" and was hailed to be his best performance till then. In ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, he was described as "natural" and "extremely endearing".

While critics believed that his negative role in ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ was "an accomplished performance", his strong acting skill in the film ‘Being Cyrus’ surprised critics, who applauded him for being a “matured actor”.
