Childhood & Early Life
Lin-Manuel Miranda was born on January 16, 1980 in Upper Manhattan, New York City to Puerto Rican parents, Luz Towns and Luis A. Miranda, Jr. His mother was a clinical psychologist while his father worked as a consultant to the New York City mayor Ed Koch. Miranda has an older sister named Luz who works in the MirRam Group as a Chief Financial Officer.
Although Miranda’s childhood was mostly spent in the Latino neighborhood of Inwood, he never failed to spend one month at his grandparent’s house in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, every year.
Following his mother’s ancestral roots, Miranda describes his ancestry as a quarter Mexican. In fact, ‘Lin-Manuel’ the name is an inspiration taken from a Vietnam War poem written by José Manuel Torres Santiago.
After completing his elementary and high school from Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School respectively, he went to Wesleyan University to do major in theatre studies. Post his graduation, he worked as a high school English teacher for a small span of time.
Being exposed to various genres of music at an early stage ignited Miranda’s love for hip-hop and started scribbling while studying at school. He wrote jingles which were later used for Eliot Spitzer’s gubernatorial campaign in 2006.
During his university days, he formed a hip-hop comedy troupe named 'Freestyle Love Supreme' and scribbled through the earliest drafts of ‘In the Heights’.
Career & Achievements
Miranda started his career back in 2002 where he along with John Buffalo Mailer worked with director Thomas Kail for the revival of ‘In the Heights’. In 2004, this team of three was joined by writer Quiara Alegría Hudes. This musical hit the Broadway in March 2008 and became a massive hit and ran for two years at a stretch.
His debut work brought him four Tony Awards and an award for the Best Musical and Best Original Score. It also bagged the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2009.
Miranda made two new songs for the revised version of Schwartz and Nina Faso's 1978 musical ‘Working’ as per the request of composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz. In May 2008 it opened in Florida at the Asolo Repertory Theatre.
Miranda worked with Stephen Sondheim for translating the 2009 Broadway revival of ‘West Side Story’ into Spanish.
His work was not restricted to Broadway only. He was seen making a guest appearance on the television series ‘The Sopranos’ in the episode "Remember When". He essayed the character of Gregory House's roommate, Alvie, in a psychiatric hospital, in the premiere episode of ‘House’, season six in 2010.
He composed and acted in seventeen episodes of the revival of ‘The Electric Company’ in 2009. He was seen as a rapper and intern in the CollegeHumor sketch "Hardly Working: Rap Battle".
Miranda sang the theme song in the recurring segment ‘Murray has a Little Lamb’ and played occasional roles in there.
He has also held the column in the Manhattan Times reviewing restaurants and composing music for various commercials.
Along with Tom Kitt and Amanda Green, Miranda composed the music and lyrics for ‘Bring It On’ which was premiered at the Alliance Theatre, Georgia in the January of 2011. This was one of the nominations in the Tony Awards that made its place in the Best Musical and Best Choreography categories.
He was seen in several television series. He appeared in the episode "Good Cop Bad Dog" of the TV series Modern Family in 2011 and in the ninth season of ‘How I Met Your Mother’.

Inspired by the historical figure of Alexander Hamilton, Miranda went on to create magic in the musical named ‘Hamilton’ which recreated his fame all over again. At first he sang a song from the future at the White House's first-ever Evening of Poetry & Spoken Word in the year 2009. It went on to become a part of Lincoln Center Theater’s American Songbook Series in 2012 and the New York Stage and Film’s Powerhouse Theatre Season at Vassar College in 2013.
Finally, ‘Hamilton’ debuted in 2015 at the public theatre and the rest is history. The advance tickets were sold like a hot cake and the musical was greatly praised by famous personalities like Barack Obama and Stephen Sondheim. He was honored with a MacArthur Foundation Award in that same year.
The year 2016 was a great one for this genius. He won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in April. The month of May witnessed a new record in the history of Broadway as ‘Hamilton’ was nominated for 16 Tony Awards. Not only this, the production won 11 out of the 16 nominations. Miranda received two Tony Awards in the Original Score and Book categories.
In his golden year 2016, Miranda set his foot on the big screen as well. He composed the lyrics and music of "How Far I'll Go" for the animated movie ‘Moana’. This got him a nomination for an Academy Award in the category of the Original Song.
Miranda in 2009 was given an honorary degree from Yeshiva University, in Washington Heights, Manhattan and became the youngest person to receive the honor.
He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from his alma mater, Wesleyan University and a MacArthur "Genius" Award in the year 2015.
