On Monday, Google unveiled its experimental AI chat service Bard, a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Google’s AI chatbot will be tested by a select number of users before rolling out to the general public over the next few weeks.

Powered by Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), Bard draws on any information from the web to provide answers. This in itself is a big differentiator from ChatGPT, which can only access information until 2021 and has no access to the internet.

“Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in the press release.

Bard will be able to condense complex topics into bite-sized pieces of conversation. The idea is to increase the dissemination of knowledge in a way that is understandable and can stimulate learning for everyone, including children. A sample prompt from the publication included using Bard to help you explain discoveries made by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old.

The initial release of Bard will use a lightweight model version of LaMDA as it requires less processing power and, according to the release, can be scaled for more users. This allows Google to collect more feedback before releasing it to the general public.

Both internal and external feedback are taken into account to ensure Bard meets expectations for quality, safety and down-to-earthness, Pichai said. The press release emphasized Google’s commitment to responsible use of AI to ensure it is both safe and useful.

Google usually takes this approach, sticking with advanced AI services until they’re sure they’re ready for the public. For example, Google has a very powerful AI image generator, Imagen, and an AI music generator, MusicLM, both of which have yet to be released to the public.
