Kyle Chandler was born in Buffalo, New York on 17th September 1965. His father Edward Chandler was a pharmaceutical sales representative, while his mother Sally Jeanette was a dog breeder. He is the youngest of their four children. He is of German, English, and Irish descent.
He studied at the George Walton Academy, from where he graduated in 1983. His father passed away during his teenage years after which his mother supported the family by running the business Sheenwater Kennels.
He later enrolled at the University of Georgia to pursue a major in drama. However, he later quit after he was offered roles in television.

Kyle Chandler made his TV debut in 1988 with a supporting role in the television film 'Quiet Victory'. He next appeared in the TV series 'Tour of Duty', which was based on the events of the Vietnam War. Chandler played the supporting role of a soldier.
