Jurgen Klinsmann is a former German football player; he was a striker of rare quality who played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe and also turned in plenty of superlative performances for the national team in a professional career that spanned for a period of close to two decades. Klinsmann started his professional career with the club VFB Stuttgart and after scoring plenty of goals for the club, he was selected to play for the German national team, in 1987. From then on, Klinsmann was a regular player in the national team and helped the team win the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Klinsmann scored 47 goals in his entire career with the German national team, which is the fourth highest in the list of goal scorers for Germany and also helped the team win the European Championships in 1996. Klinsmann played for Italian side Inter Milan and then went on to play for Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich. He won one league title with Bayern Munich. Following the end of his professional career as a footballer, Klinsmann became a coach and guided the German national team the semifinals of the World Cup in 2006. He managed Bayern Munich as well but the stint was a disappointing one. Currently, he is the manager of the U.S. national soccer team.

Childhood & Early Life

Jurgen Klinsmann was born on July 30, 1964, in Goppingen West Germany, to Siegfried Klinsmann and Martha Klinsmann. His father was a master baker, who went on to own his own bakery. Jurgen has three brothers.

He started playing football when he was still a child and at the age of eight he started playing for a non-professional club named TB Gingen; he turned out to be a prolific goal scorer for the club. At the age of 10, he moved to SC Geislingen.

When Jurgen was 14 years old the family moved to Stuttgart following his father’s decision to open his own bakery in the city. Jurgen signed a contract with Stuttgarter Kickers, a German association football club, at the age of 16. At the insistence of his parents, he finished his apprenticeship as a baker, in 1982

Career

Jurgen Klinsmann started his professional career with Stuttgarter Kickers, in 1982. He became one of their vital players and by the end of 1983-1984 season, he had scored 19 goals for the club.

In 1984, he moved to VFB Stuttgart, which played in the German first division and in his very first season at the club, he scored 15 goals.

Jurgen Klinsmann became an extremely prolific goal scorer for VFB Stuttgart as he scored 16 league goals in the season ending in 1986 and followed it up with an identical tally the following year.

In 1987, he was selected for the German national team and a year later he represented the team at the Olympics and the European Championships.

After scoring 79 league goals for VFB Stuttgart in five years, Jurgen Klinsmann moved to Italian club Inter Milan, in 1989. During his three year stint at the club, he scored 34 goals and helped the team win the UEFA Cup in his second season. However, he did not renew his contract after losing his goal scoring form and instead moved to French club Monaco.

Klinsmann proved to be one of Germany’s most important players at the 1990 World Cup played in Italy. He scored the crucial goal in the round-of-16 clash against the Netherlands. Germany went on to win the World Cup and Klinasmann played a crucial role in the tournament win.

In 1992, later, he was the part of the German team that reached the final of the European Championships and in the subsequent World Cup in 1994, Klinsmann scored 5 goals but Germany was knocked out in the quarter finals.

After spending two seasons at Monaco and another season at English club Tottenham Hotspur; Jurgen Klinsmann joined German club Bayern Munich in 1995. He spent two seasons at Bayern Munich and emerged as the top goal scorer in each season as he helped the club win the 1995-96 UEFA Cup. Subsequently, he played for Italian club Sampdoria for some time before moving back to Tottenham Hotspur for a season.

In 1996, Jurgen Klinsmann led Germany to the European Championships title in England and scored three goals in the tournament.

In 1998, he scored three goals in the World Cup in France but Germany was knocked out by Croatia in the quarter finals. Klinsmann scored 47 goals for his country which made him the 4th highest goal scorer for Germany.

In 2004, Jurgen Klinsmann was made the manager of the German national team and went about building a team filled with youngsters. The team reached the semifinals of the 2006 World Cup tournament but was knocked out by eventual champions Italy.

In 1998, he was appointed the manager of Bayern Munich, however, a string of poor performances meant that he was sacked even before the season was over.

In 2011, Jurgen Klinsmann took over as the manager of the United States national football team and during his stint, the national team’s performances improved significantly which culminated in a round of 16 finish at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
