Childhood & Early Life

Juliette Lewis was born Juliette Lake Lewis in Woodland Hills in California, United States on June 2, 1973.

Her father is an actor named Geoffrey Lewis and her mother is a graphic designer named Glenis Duggan Batley.

Her parents divorced when she was only two years but she and her siblings stayed with each separated parent at different times.

She has three brothers named Lightfield, Peterand Miles; four sisters named Brandy, Hannah and Emily, a half-sister named Dierdre and a half-brother named Matthew.

Juliette was very interested in acting from a very early age and wanted to act on stage when she was only seven years old.

At the age of twelve in 1987 she got her first chance to appear in the leading role in a sitcom titled ‘Home Fires’ but got embroiled in a controversy as her parents raised the issue of child labor.

She got hooked on marijuana at the age of thirteen and had to drop out of school within three weeks after joining when she was fifteen years old.

In 1988, she filed an appeal in court so that she could be legally separated from her parents in order to get more roles as a child earning for herself which included a role in the sitcom ‘The Wonder Years’.

In 1989, she starred in a film titled ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ with Chevy Chase.

Juliette Lewis got her first big break in 1991 at the age of eighteen when Martin Scorsese, directing the film ‘Cape Fear’, cast her in the role of Danielle Bowden.

In 1992, she was selected for a role in ‘Husbands and Wives’ by Woody Allen in which she played the role of a student with a penchant for her professor.

After ‘Husbands and Wives’, she appeared in a number of films in 1993 such as ‘Kalifornia’, ‘Romeo is Bleeding’, and ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ opposite Johnny Depp.

In 1993, she also bagged the role of a serial killer in the film ‘Natural Born Killers’ directed by Oliver Stone.

When she was fifteen, she was arrested for going to a dance bar under age. To get the charges dropped, her father took a mug shot of her which was blown up to make her look more aged. The picture still hangs in Juliette’s living room.

She started driving without a license from the age of fifteen and got a proper driving license only at the age of twenty-one after she was arrested for not having one.

When she was twenty-six, she had to spend some time at the detox center ‘Florida Church of Scientology’ to get rid of the serious drug addiction she had developed after her break-up with Brad Pritt.
