Who is Ivica Dačić?
Ivica Dacic is currently the First Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia. He previously held the office of Prime Minister until he assumed his current role. Dacic has been an active participant in politics since his graduation from Belgrade University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He has held a number of government offices during his political career. Dacic is the leader of the Socialist Party of Serbia. During the Balkan Wars, he worked closely with Slobodan Milosevic until Milosevic’s downfall. In the years since the Serbian government was overthrown, the nation has been making many changes as it works toward admission into the European Union. Dacic’s previous association with Milosevic caused much speculation that he would steer the country away from that goal and bring back the nationalist policies of the past. However, Ivica Dacic has publically stated that he has abandoned the former hard-lined nationalistic approach to adopt a pro-European Union stance. Thus, he has been diligently working to bring about reform in Serbia to meet requirements for admission into the E.U. Dacic is also known as an avid sports fan. He has served in leadership roles in several sports associations, including serving as Vice President of the Yugoslav Olympic Committee

He has been associated with socialism since his youth. Dacic was involved with the Youth Wing of the Belgrade Socialist party, and also served as its chairman.
Career
Dacic became a member of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) in 1991. He quickly rose through the ranks of the SPS, and has held numerous governmental offices throughout his career.
Ivica Dacic’s official government career began in 1992 when he was elected to the Federal Assembly of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia’s Citizens’ Chamber. His career coincided with the turmoil the region experienced during the wars in the Balkans.
Dacic worked closely with the former President, Slobodan Milošević, and was well known for his admiration of Milošević.
When Slobodan Milošević was overthrown in the year 2000, a new government was elected in Serbia which steered the country in a new direction. Dacic then had to distance himself not only from Milošević, but also his party’s previous policies.
He was involved in both the transitional government of the Republic of Serbia and the new Serbian government. Dacic served as the transitional government’s Minister of information from October 2000 to January 2001.
In 2004, he contested the Serbian presidential elections and was placed fifth.
In 2008, he was appointed as the First Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia and Minister of Interior.
Dacic became the prime minister in the coalition government that came to power after the 2012 elections.
In April 2014, he was appointed First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Despite distancing himself from Slobodan Milošević, Ivica Dacic has stayed firm on some of his previous stances. He has publicly stated numerous times that the Serbian government will never recognize Kosovo as an independent sovereign nation.
He also continues to nurture strong ties with Russia, and has even made it known that Serbia will not cut ties with Russia to join the European Union.
He has also made many public statements asserting that despite his involvement with the previous government’s policy of war and aggression, he is now committed to peaceful solutions to Serbia’s problems.
This new policy of peace also extends to Serbia’s approach to the Kosovo situation. Although Serbia does not recognize Kosovo’s independence, Ivica Dacic has demonstrated his willingness to engage in talks with Kosovo’s leaders.
Major Works
He participated in Serbia’s transitional government as well as its current regime. As such, Dacic has had a strong role in guiding Serbia in a new direction.
