Who is Gloria Borger?

Gloria Anne Borger is an experienced American political analyst, journalist, news anchor, presenter, and columnist, who presently serves as the chief political analyst at ‘CNN.’ A graduate from Colgate University, she commenced her journey in journalism with political news coverage at the daily afternoon-newspaper ‘Washington Star.’ Moving on, she worked with several reputed organizations. She worked for ‘U.S. News & World Report’ magazine as a columnist and contributing editor, for ‘CBS News’ as a national political correspondent, and for ‘CNBC’s’ ‘Capital Report’ as a co-anchor. She featured in various ‘CBS’ programs, including the American weekly primetime news-magazine program ‘60 Minutes II’ and the American Sunday-morning political interview show ‘Face the Nation.’ She has also appeared in several shows of ‘CNN’ after joining the network in 2007. These include ‘The Lead with Jake Tapper,’ ‘The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer,’ and ‘John King, USA.’ Her career, spanning over four decades in journalism, saw her receiving several awards and honors. These included being part of the ‘CNN’ team that won a ‘Primetime Emmy’ award for presenting the live coverage of the 2012 US elections. She also earned an ‘Emmy’ nomination for the 2010 piece ‘The Odd Couple,’ which saw her profiling powerhouse attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies.

Childhood & Early Life

Gloria was born on September 22, 1952, in New Rochelle, New York, USA, into a Jewish family. Her father, Richard Borger, was the owner of an electrical-appliances distribution company, ‘Borger’s.’

Growing up in New Rochelle with her sibling Paula Borger, Gloria studied at the ‘New Rochelle High School,’ from where she completed her graduation in 1970. Thereafter, she enrolled at ‘Colgate University,’ a private liberal-arts college, situated in Madison County, New York, and graduated from in 1974.

Career

Following her graduation, Gloria stepped into the world of journalism that saw her covering political news for ‘Washington Star,’ a yesteryear daily afternoon-newspaper, published in Washington DC. She also co-authored a daily serial that was later published as the book ‘Federal Triangle,’ a parody of Washington’s political scenario.

She served ‘U.S. News & World Report’ as a political columnist and had a stint with ‘Newsweek’ as the congressional correspondent. In 1979, she reported the ‘Three Mile Island’ accident for ‘Newsweek.’ Her initial journalism career saw her earning the ‘Watson Traveling Fellowship’ to study the British press.

Starting from 2002 to 2004, she served as the co-anchor of ‘CNBC's’ ‘Capital Report.’

She worked as a national political correspondent for ‘CBS News.’ She appeared in the ‘CBS’ Sunday-morning political interview show ‘Face the Nation’ and in the American weekly primetime news-magazine TV program ‘60 Minutes II,’ apart from contributing to many of the network's special events coverage.

She joined ‘CNN’ in September 2007 and presently serves them as their chief political analyst. She regularly features in the newscast ‘Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer,’ hosted by Wolf Blitzer and aired live on ‘CNN’ on weekdays, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm ET. She is also part of the TV news show ‘Anderson Cooper 360,’ which airs in the evening, from Monday to Friday, and is hosted by Anderson Cooper.

Over the years, she has remained a significant part of the election coverage programs of ‘CNN.’ These includ the famous ‘America Votes 2008’ coverage that won the network a ‘Peabody Award,’ the political coverage of the midterm elections in 2010, and the 2012 US election night coverage that won ‘CNN’ a ‘Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Live Coverage.’

‘The Odd Couple,’ her 2010 piece for ‘CNN,’ in which she interviewed powerhouse Washington attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies, brought her an ‘Emmy’ nomination. Olson and Boies, otherwise political opposites, joined hands in a legal alliance to back the idea of same-sex marriage against California's ‘Proposition 8.’

The topic was again taken up by Gloria in 2013, as Olson and Boies presented arguments on the case before the ’US Supreme Court.’ Her examination on the subject eventually evolved in a half-hour ‘CNN’ special, ‘Marriage Warriors: Showdown at the Supreme Court.’ It won an ‘American Gavel Award’ from the ‘American Judges Association’ and a first place at the ‘National Headliner Award,’ both in 2014.

Meanwhile, in 2012, she reported a 90-minute documentary for ‘CNN’ on the career and life of American businessman and politician Mitt Romney, the ‘Republican Party’s’ presidential nominee for the 2012 election.

The documentary included Romney’s political endeavors and his dedication for the ‘Mormon’ religion. Gloria traveled to France and interviewed Romney and his family for this purpose. Following the election, in which the ‘Democratic Party’ candidate Barack Obama defeated Romney, Gloria took an extended interview of Romney and his wife.

A seasoned political analyst and columnist with sharp journalistic insight, Gloria plays a vital role in adding value to the daily coverage on the network. She continues to report on different political stories and breaking news. Some of the notable ones include the search for Osama bin Laden, the 2013 ‘Boston Marathon’ bombing, the government shutdown in 2013, and the US presidential election of 2016.

In her September 2016 documentary ‘All Business: The Essential Donald Trump,’ spanning two hours, she gave a detailed report on Trump’s journey from his early years to becoming the Republican presidential nominee.

She reported another documentary in September 2016, titled ‘Almost President: The Agony of Defeat.’ This hour-long documentary included interviews of former presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Bob Dole, Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, and John McCain, who shared their experiences of living through and losing the American presidency.

She writes a regular column for ‘CNN.com’ and is a correspondent of ‘Gloria Borger Reports,’ a well-acknowledged series of in-depth specials that airs across all ‘CNN’ platforms.
