Who is Gerard Butler?

Butler was passionate about movies from his younger days and was an enthusiastic movie goer and member of the Scottish Youth Theatre group. After graduating in law, he was not sure if law was what he wanted to do and thus, relocated to London to pursue his dream of becoming famous. He made his stage appearance in the Shakespeare tragedy, ‘Coriolanus’, while hunting for movie roles. Childhood & Early Life
Gerard James Butler was born to Edward Butler, a bookmaker, and Margaret Butler. He was raised in a very conservative and strict Roman Catholic family.
He went to the St Mirin's & St Margaret's High School, where he was a bright student and exhibited strong leadership qualities. He later pursued law at the Glasgow University. Meanwhile, he enrolled himself at the Scottish Youth Theatre during his teen years.
After he graduated from law school, he took up a job as a trainee lawyer at an Edinburgh law firm. However, due to his frequent absence from work he was consequently fired.
At the age of 25, he decided to relocate to London in order to pursue his dream of becoming famous. In London, he could not find acting roles and took up odd jobs to support himself.

He made his first appearance in the Steven Berkoff play titled, ‘Coriolanus’. Thereafter, he bagged a role in the theatre adaptation of the Irvine Welsh novel, ‘Trainspotting’, which was running at the Edinburgh Festival.
In 1997, he played the role of ‘Archie Brown’ in the Academy Award nominated Golden Globe winning British drama film, ‘Mrs. Brown’. The film was also screened at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.
In 1998, he appeared in the British-American horror film titled, ‘Tale of the Mummy’, which was directed by Russell Mulcahy. The film was set in Egypt - in and around Egyptian excavation sites.
