Who is Steven Tyler?
Steven Tyler, born as Steven Victor Tallarico is the lead singer of the popular rock band Aerosmith which he had helped to form over four decades ago. Blessed with a wide vocal range, he is known for his high-pitched screams which earned him the nickname ‘Demon of Screamin’. The talented musician also plays multiple instruments like harmonica, piano and percussion. Highly energetic, he could often be seen performing acrobatics during his on-stage performances usually dressed in bold and bright coloured costumes. He was born into a family of music lovers—his father was a classical musician and music teacher—and music was an inherent part of his life from the very beginning. He loved playing music from an early age and there was no doubt in his mind about his future career choice. He met the aspiring musicians Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton with whom he formed the rock band Aerosmith. After a series of minor hits during their initial years, the band broke into mainstream success during the mid 1970s. However the band’s success was eclipsed by the members’ drug problems. The band became notorious for its drug addiction, with Tyler’s drug abuse becoming the most problematic. After undergoing rehabilitation, the band mates made a comeback and rose to prominence once again.

Childhood & Early Life
He was born as one of the two children of Susan Ray, a secretary and Victor Tallarico, a classical musician and music teacher. He is of mixed ancestry.
He went to the Roosevelt High school and later attended the Leonard Quintano for Young Professionals School.
He loved music from a young age and was the drummer and singer in a number of rock and roll bands during his youth.
Career
He met his future band mates, Joe Perry (guitars) and Tom Hamilton (bass) at a local rock show in 1969. The trio decided to form a band. Two other musicians were recruited and the Aerosmith was formed in 1970.
The band signed a record deal with Columbia Records in 1972 and released their self-titled album in 1973. It was quickly followed by their next album ‘Get Your Wings’ in 1974. During this time the band also toured and opened for other bands.
The mid 1970s was a good time for Aerosmith. They became very famous with the release of the albums ‘Toys in the Attic’ (1975) and ‘Rocks’ (1976) in quick succession.
Tyler was fast becoming a youth icon and sex symbol with the success of the band. By 1976, Aerosmith was much in demand for giving performances at major rock music festivals where they played before packed stadiums.
The album ‘Draw the Line’ was out in 1977. Like its predecessors, this album too was a big success. It featured the singles ‘Draw the Line’ and ‘Get it Up’. The album was listed among the "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time".
The band toured a lot during this time and performed in places like Europe and Japan. Their live shows were super hits among their crazy fans who could never have enough of their music idols.
By the end of the decade of 1970s, the band however began to fall apart. The band members became embroiled in personal fights and Tyler and Perry both developed drug problems that threatened their careers. Perry soon left Aerosmith.
Tyler was involved in a motorcycle accident in 1980 which furthered his decline. His drug problem worsened and by 1982 all he cared was how to obtain drugs. He was also heavily into drinking which affected his voice.
After being inactive for years, the band reunited for a comeback concert tour ‘Back in the Saddle Tour’ in 1984. Even during this period the members were still into drugs.
Realizing that they were jeopardizing their careers because of their drug addiction, all the members decided to check into rehabilitation in 1986. By the end of the decade they had completed their treatment.
Their next album ‘Pump’ was out in 1989. The album was highly successful and spawned three Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. The songs dealt with issues like incest, murder, alcoholism and drug abuse.
The band continued recording into the 1990s though they were no longer as prolific as before. Their 1993 album ‘Get a Grip’ became the band’s best selling album worldwide. The album featured several guest artsists like Desmond Child, Jim Vallance, and Jack Blades.
Aerosmith kept busy throughout the first decade of the new millennium by touring, performing live shows and also by releasing albums. Their albums for the decade included: ‘Just Push Play’ (2001) and ‘Honkin' on Bobo’ (2004). The band’s latest album is ‘Music from Another Dimension’ (2012).
Major Works
The album ‘Pump’ is the only one of Aerosmith’s albums to have produced three Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. ‘Love in an Elevator’ was the band’s first song to reach No.1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Aerosmith’s album ‘Get a Grip’ sold over 20 million copies worldwide. The songs in the album won two Grammy Awards and the album was voted Album of the year in 1993 by ‘Metal Edge’.
