Who is Steve King?
Steven Arnold “Steve” King is a Congressman who has been serving as the U.S. Representative for Iowa’s 4th congressional district since 2003. He was a businessman before he entered the world of politics and had built an earth moving company, King Construction, starting with just one bulldozer. He was a very hardworking man with astute business acumen which enabled him to build a highly successful business. Because of the nature of his business he was closely involved with the Iowa Land Improvement Contractors' Association and was disillusioned with the way government officials behaved whenever he had to interact with them on business issues. This kindled in him an interest in public policy and governance. He forayed into politics and served in the Iowa Senate for six years and was also a member of the Appropriations Committee, Judiciary Committee and the Commerce Committee. His experience as a businessman proved to be very beneficial in his political career as he could review policies from the perspective of not just a politician, but also from the angle of the common man. The outspoken politician is a social conservative and a strong pro-life advocate who believes in the sanctity of the life of the unborn. He is also a frequent contributor to several newspapers, magazines and radio.

Childhood & Early Life
King is the son of Mildred Lila and Emmett King. His father was a state police dispatcher while his mother was a homemaker. He is of mixed ancestry.
He attended Denison Community High School and graduated in 1967.
He studied mathematics at the Northwest Missouri State University from 1967 to 1970. But he did not graduate and left before earning a degree.
Career
He aspired to work in construction and founded King Construction, an earth moving business in 1975. He started his work with a single bulldozer and built the business with his hard work and tenacity.
In the 1980s he formed the Kiron Business Association. The nature of his business required him to get involved with the Iowa Land Improvement Contractors’ Association. Soon he was holding regional and national offices in the organization.
His interest in public policy was growing and so was his disappointment with the government and the office holders who he felt were indifferent to the problems of the common man.
He successfully ran for Iowa’s 6th Senate district in 1996 by defeating Democrat Eileen Heiden 64%-35%. He won the re-election to a second term in 2000 after defeating Democratic Dennis Ryan.
He served as an Iowa State Senator from 1996 to 2002 during which he helped in eliminating the inheritance tax, passed taxation reforms, strengthened parental rights and passed a law for making English the official language in Iowa.
During his tenure he also served as the Vice Chairman of the Oversight Budget and Chairman of the State Government Committee. He was also a member of the Appropriations Committee, Commerce Committee and Judiciary Committee.
He ran for the open Iowa’s 5th congressional district in 2002. He was unable to get the 35% voting threshold and therefore a nominating convention was held which led to his nomination. He won the general election against contender Council Bluffs City Councilman Paul Shomshor 62%-38%.
Steve King is a very popular politician who emphasized on traditional family values, advocated pro-life measures, brought about taxation reforms, and most importantly brought to politics his hands-on experience as a small businessman. He easily won the re-elections for the next five terms.
In 2012, Iowa was redistributed to four districts and he now represents the Fourth Congressional District in the 113th Congress.
Under his guidance (he serves on the Agriculture Committee), the Fourth District became one of the leading producers of Agricultural produce in America. He is also the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Department Operations, Oversight and Nutrition.
One of his first priorities in Congress was renewable energy production. He passed a bill for the expansion of tax credits to small producers of ethanol and biodiesel.
Having first-hand experience of being a businessman, he brought to the Small Business Committee his knowledge of the opportunities and challenges faced by small business owners. He worked towards restricting governmental regulations that could hamper the growth of small businesses.
He has also had his share of controversies. He stirred the hornet’s nest with his comments on Barack Obama’s Islamic sounding middle name, Hussein, for which he was severely criticized. He also made disrespectful remarks about America’s migrant population without acknowledging their role in the country’s development.
Major Works
He is a Congressman serving as the U.S. Representative for Iowa's 4th congressional district. A former businessman, he implemented several reforms to encourage the growth of small businesses in Iowa, and made production of renewable energy one of his top priorities. He is widely respected for his accomplishments not just in Iowa, but throughout the U.S.
