Who is Björn Borg?
Björn Borg is a Swedish former World No. 1 tennis player counted amongst the greatest tennis players of all time. The first male professional to win 11 Grand Slam singles titles, he holds numerous Open Era records including winning 41% of the Grand Slam singles tournaments he entered and 90% of those matches. He became fascinated with tennis as a young boy after his father won a golden tennis racket at a table-tennis tournament. He was naturally skilled at playing the sport and caught the attention of the tennis coach Percy Rosberg who groomed the young boy for a professional career. He blossomed into an exceptional player and won his first tournament at the age of 11 and soon emerged victorious in the 13- and 14-year-old divisions of the Swedish National Junior Championships as well. A teenage sensation by now, he dropped out of school to focus on his tennis career. He won the Wimbledon junior championship in 1972 and turned professional soon after. His string of successes continued to grow at an unprecedented rate and in 1979 he became the first player to earn more than one million dollars in prize money in a single season. However, he buckled under the pressure of achieving too much at a young age and suffered a burnout when he was just 26, retiring abruptly.

Childhood & Early Life
Björn Rune Borg was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on 6 June 1956, to Rune and Margaretha Borg, as their only child.
His fascination with tennis began when he was a little boy and he started playing the sport when he was nine. He possessed a natural talent for the game which got noticed by tennis coach Percy Rosberg who began mentoring him.
He won his first tournament at the age of 11, and within a couple of years he was easily defeating Sweden’s top junior players. He won both the 13- and 14-year-old divisions of the Swedish National Junior Championships when he was 13.
Realizing that he was meant to pursue tennis professionally, he quit school as a teenager and focused on his sporting career.
Career
Borg qualified for the Swedish Davis Cup team at the young age of 15. From there on, his career was on the upswing. The teenage sensation won the 1972 Wimbledon junior championship, beating Britain's Buster Mottram.
He turned professional in 1973 and managed to reach the fourth round of his first French Open. He won his first top-level singles title at the Italian Open in 1974, shortly before his 18th birthday. The same year, he won the French Open, defeating Manuel Orantes in the final in five sets, becoming the youngest-ever male French Open champion up to that point.
His stature as a professional continued to rise and by 1975 he had won 16 consecutive cup singles, passing Bill Tilden’s record of 12. He also retained the French Open title in 1975, beating Guillermo Vilas in the final and helped Sweden win its first Davis Cup the same year.
He reached newer heights in 1976, winning the Wimbledon without losing a set, defeating the favorite Ilie Năstase in the final. At 20 years and 1 month, Borg became the youngest male Wimbledon champion of the modern era up to that time.
His career peaked in the years 1978 through 1980. In 1978, Borg won the French Open with a win over Vilas in the final, without dropping a single set during the tournament.
In 1980 he won the Wimbledon Men's Singles final, by defeating McEnroe in a five-set match, often cited as the best Wimbledon final ever played. He defeated McEnroe in the final of the 1980 Stockholm Open as well. However, he lost the 1980 US Open to the same opponent.
In 1981 he won the French Open yet again, defeating Lendl in a five-set final. He has six French Open Grand Slam titles, a record bettered only by Rafael Nadal in 2012. He lost to McEnroe at the 1981 US Open, in what would be his last Grand Slam final.
He played only one tournament in 1982, losing to Yannick Noah in the quarterfinals of Monte Carlo. In January 1983, he shocked the tennis world by announcing his retirement. He was just 26 and McEnroe tried to persuade Borg to continue. Years later, Borg unsuccessfully attempted a short-lived comeback in 1991.
Following his retirement he founded the Björn Borg fashion label which is today a very successful business, and is second only to Calvin Klein in Sweden.
