Thalía is a Mexican singer, songwriter, producer, actor, and entrepreneur. She is known as one of the most influential Mexican musicians of all time. She was born into a well-settled Mexican family in Mexico City, Mexico. As a child, she faced intense psychological trauma following the death of her father. She developed a keen interest in performing arts and started her musical journey as part of a kids’ music group named ‘Pac Man.’ In 1990, she released her debut solo album, ‘Thalía.’ Following the chartbusting success of her debut album, she never looked back. She has released 12 studio albums and has attained a level of international success that no other female Mexican musician has ever achieved. Known as the “Queen of Latin Pop,” she has sold more than 25 million copies of her records till now. She has won numerous awards over the course of her career and has collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians of her time. Childhood & Early Life
Thalía was born Ariadna Thalía Sodi Miranda, on August 26, 1971, in Mexico City, Mexico. She is the youngest daughter of her parents. She was born into a well-settled Mexican upper middle-class family. Her mother, Yolanda Miranda, was an esteemed painter, and her father, Ernesto Sodi Pallares, was a scientist, criminologist, pathologist, and writer.
Thalía was the youngest of the five children in the family and was heavily influenced by her mother to pursue art. Her parents knew a lot of people in the entertainment industry, and this led Thalía to make her first-ever TV appearance when she was just a year old. Her first commercial was for a major Mexican brand.
Observing her interest in music and arts, her mother got her enrolled at the ‘National Conservatory of Music of Mexico’ when she was 4 years old. Thalía started taking piano and dance lessons there.
When she was 6 years old, she was faced with a major tragedy. She lost her father to a prolonged sickness. She was extremely close to her father and found it difficult to get over his death.
She admitted later that the death of her father had traumatized her badly and that she took many years to recover. She used music and dance to forget the pain and also visited psychiatrists. She was later diagnosed with childhood disintegrative disorder (CHD).
She attended the ‘Liceo Franco Mexicano’ elementary school and was often bullied there.
Career
Thalía started her music career in 1981, as part of a children’s music group named ‘Pac Man.’ The group was formed to help them participate in the talent show ‘Let’s Play While Singing.’ The band’s name was later changed to ‘Din-Din.’
Thalía became the most popular member of the group and performed at many parties and social events. They also toured around Mexico. Between 1982 and 1984, the band released four albums, which attained moderate success. However, the band was eventually disbanded.
Following her departure from ‘Din-Din,’ Thalía went solo with her musical dreams and participated in many festivals across the country. She earned the reputation of being a “modern rock girl” and performed as a solo artist on many platforms. She also performed in groups.
In 1986, she officially joined a children’s band named ‘Timbiriche,’ which had five recorded albums to its credit by then. She also starred in the telenovela ‘Quinceañera,’ where she played the co-lead, ‘Beatriz.’ Thalía was awarded with the “Best New Actress” honor by the ‘Premios TVyNovelas.’ She also recorded the main theme of the show, along with her band.
Thalía recorded four albums with ‘Timbiriche.’ In 1989, she quit the band officially. The same year, she played the first leading role of her career, in the series ‘Light and Shadow.’ She also briefly moved to the US to improve her English language skills. She got enrolled at the ‘University of California’ to learn music, dance, and acting.
In 1990, she returned to her homeland and started working as a professional solo singer. The same year, she released her debut solo album, ‘Thalía,’ with the label ‘Fonovisa.’ The album contained four singles that became major radio hits across the country. It was moderately successful.
In 1991, Thalía released her second album, which was a bigger hit than her first one. Titled ‘Mundo de Cristal,’ the album was a major radio hit and sold thousands of copies. It was certified “double gold” in Mexico. Her third album, ‘Love,’ registered another success story for Thalía and was certified “platinum” and “gold” in Mexico.
The album broke national barriers and became a big hit in all the Latin American countries. In 1994, she signed a contract with the record label ‘EMI.’
In 1995, she released her next album, ‘En Éxtasis ,’ which contained seven singles. One of the singles, ‘Piel Morena,’ broke many national records and became a huge international hit. The song was honored massively in the US and was regarded as the best Spanish song ever in the US.
Thalía continued her dreamy success story in the US, with the release of more albums. She started getting invited to perform at stage shows around the country. In 2001, she was invited to a party by US President George W Bush. She is widely known as the best Mexican female music icon in the US.
She has also made a fairly successful career as an actor. In 1992, she appeared in the telenovela ‘María Mercedes,’ which was a phenomenal success. She also appeared in its sequels, ‘Marimar’ and ‘María la del Barrio.’ ‘Marimar’ is widely considered to be the best telenovela of all time.
Thalía has also ventured into fashion. She signed a deal with ‘Kmart’ in 2002 and started her own line of clothing and accessories. She owns the brand ‘Thalía Eyewear Collection,’ in association with ‘Kenmark Optical.’ She also owns her own chocolate and candy brand.
