Childhood & Early Life

Sarah was born in Beaconsfield, to Pauline, a teacher and Iain, a Scotsman, who was employed in the publishing company, Longman. Her early childhood was spent in Fife and Tanzania and later she shifted with her mother and her stepfather to North London. She has two younger brothers Sean and Bruce.

She studied at the Acland Burghley School and Camden School for Girls and then enrolled to the University of Bristol, where she obtained her degree in psychology.

Career

Sarah started her career working as a PR executive for Wolff Olins, a brand consultancy firm. When she was 30, in collaboration with a friend from school she established her own PR firm, ‘Hobsbawm Macaulay’.

In 2001, she took a break from her career and left the firm to concentrate on raising a family.

In 2002, she founded the international children’s charity, ‘PiggyBankKids’ which mobilises funds to support research into problems that arise during pregnancy. This organization works in partnership with charities, such as Chance UK, Clic Sargent, Demelza House, Place2Be, etc., to work on several projects.

In support of the various works done by the ‘Special Olympics Great Britain’, she helped publish and edit ‘Journey To The Sea’, a collection of new fiction travel, in 2005.

In 2012, she co-founded the ‘Global Business Coalition for Education’, an organization that brings together global corporate leaders to take an active part in the education of children.

In September 2012, Sarah joined the Qatari-owned ‘Harrods Group (Holding) Limited’ as the Non-Executive Director in charge of Corporate Social Responsibility.

She is the patron of several charity organizations currently including, ‘Maggie Cancer Care Centre’, ‘SHINE’, ‘Women’s Aid’, ‘Wellbeing of Women’, and ‘White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood’.

She is also the co-founder of ‘A World At School’, an on-going initiative that aims to provide educational opportunities to children. It is active in several countries.

In 2011, she published a memoir on her experiences at 10 Downing Street, entitled ‘Behind the Black Door’. Although the book was panned by critics, readers found the humorous anecdotes and simple story quite compelling.

Awards & Achievements

In recognition of her leadership and humanitarian efforts, she received the ‘Vision and Impact Award’ from The Global Coalition for Health.

For her efforts to fund research related to pregnancy and pre-natal risks, she has been recognized by the ‘International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists’ and has received an ‘Honorary Fellowship’ from ‘Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists’.

Personal Life & Legacy

Although she was acquainted with Gordon Brown through their brief encounters at Labour events, it wasn’t until a trip in 1994, that their romance blossomed. After six years of seeing each other, they got married in a quiet private ceremony on August 3, 2000.

In 2002, she lost her firstborn daughter, Jennifer Brown, who died 10 days after birth.

She has two children with Gordon Brown; John, who was born on 17th of October, 2003 and James Fraser, who was born on 17th July, 2006.

In November of 2006, her son, James Fraser was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
