Career
Dougray Scott was destined to be successful in the show business from the beginning as he took acting very seriously. He learned his trade at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he was named the “Most Promising Drama Student.” He later joined the national theatre and made his debut on television in 1990. He played a small role in the 1990 television series ‘Zorro’.
In 1992, Scott portrayed the role of ‘David Sellors’ in three episodes of the television miniseries ‘Tell Tale Hearts’. He appeared in another television series, ‘Stay Lucky’ in 1993, as ‘Alex.’
His first major role on television came in 1995 when he portrayed ‘Major Rory Taylor’ in eleven episodes of the British television drama ‘Soldier Soldier’. In 1998, he portrayed ‘Prince Henry’ in ‘Ever After,’ a romantic drama film inspired by the fairy tale ‘Cinderella’.
Scott then was recommended by Tom Cruise to the makers of the ‘Mission Impossible’ movie franchise. Cruise believed that Scott was the right man to play the role of ‘Sean Ambrose’, the antagonist, in the second part of the original movie in 2000. While shooting for ‘Mission Impossible 2’, he was offered the role of ‘Wolverine’ in the film version of ‘X-Men’ by Marvel Studio. Unfortunately for Scott, he got injured in a bike accident and could not act in this movie. The role then went to Hugh Jackman and later became one of the most iconic characters in Marvel’s superhero film genre. Scott still regrets missing out the chance!
After the last ‘James Bond’ movie featuring Pierce Brosnan—‘Die Another Day’—was finished, Scott’s name was discussed as a choice for the next James Bond. However, after considering many actors, the role eventually went to Daniel Craig for the next Bond movie ‘Casino Royale’ in 2006.
Scott appeared in ‘The Ten Commandments’, a miniseries that dramatized the biblical story of Moses, where he portrayed the lead character. From 2006 until 2007, Scott played the role of ‘Ian Hainsworth’, the love interest of Teri Hatcher's character, in the series ‘Desperate Housewives.’
His next big role in films came in 2007 when he portrayed the main antagonist ‘Mike Whittier’ in the action thriller film ‘Hitman’, which was based on the video game storyline of the same name. In 2011, Scott portrayed the role of the legendary football manager Sir Alexander Matthew Busby in the BBC television drama ‘United’. However, the character portrayal of Sir Matt Busby did not go down well with Busby’s family members. His son complained that the image projected was “more of a gangster than a football manager”. His attire was also criticized, as the character portrayed by Scott wore a long overcoat and a trilby hat instead of the tracksuit for which Sir Matt was famous.
In 2015, Scott replaced Xander Berkeley and became the lead villain, ‘Stuart St. John’, in the third part of the action thriller film ‘Taken,’ featuring Liam Neeson.
