Who is Aurelia Dobre?

Aurelia Dobre is a retired Romanian artistic gymnast who emerged as the 1987 world all-around champion at the 24th ‘World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.’ She scored five “perfect 10s” at the competition. She put up a spectacular performance at the championship where she won the gold medal in balance beam and the bronze medal in both floor exercise and vault. She was also part of the Romanian teams that won silver at the 1988 ‘Summer Olympics’ and at the 1989 ‘World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.’ Unfortunately, she suffered two major injuries and a growth spurt, which put an end to her promising gymnastics career. Although she was regarded as the youngest all-around champion of the game ever, it was later discovered that the age of Soviet gymnast Olga Bicherova was falsified at the 1981 ‘World Championships,’ which meant the latter was the youngest gymnast to win the title. Aurelia is married to Iranian gymnastics coach Boz Mofid, with whom she has four sons. She works as choreographer and a dance coach at her husband’s gym, ‘Dobre Gymnastics Academy.’ She features in ‘YouTube’ videos and has garnered popularity on applications such as ‘musical.ly,’ where she makes videos associated with gymnastics.

Childhood & Early Life

Dobre was born on November 16, 1972, in Bucharest, Romania. Not much is known about her family, her early life, or her education.

Aurelia trained in gymnastics at the ‘Deva National Training Center.’ Her head coach was Adrian Goreac.

Career

Aurelia became the 1987 world all-around champion at the 24th ‘World Artistic Gymnastics Championships,’ held in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Her brilliant performance led her to score five “perfect 10s” at the competition.

Apart from fetching the gold medal as the world all-around champion in 1987, she also garnered a gold medal as the world champion in the balance beam round. Her other notable feats at the 24th ‘World Artistic Gymnastics Championships’ that year included earning a bronze medal each in floor exercise and vault, as also remaining part of the gold-winning Romanian team.

Aurelia was believed to be the youngest gymnast to become the world all-around champion, having competed at the event at the age of 14 years and 352 days. However, it was later discovered that Soviet gymnast Olga Bicherova, whose age was falsified at the 1981 ‘World Championships,’ was actually the youngest winner of the title, having won it at age 13.

Aurelia then eyed the 1988 Seoul ‘Summer Olympics,’ but she had to undergo a knee surgery before the event. The artistic gymnastics events of the ‘Summer Olympics’ that year were held from September 18 to September 25, at Seoul’s ‘Olympic Gymnastics Hall.’ Although Aurelia did not win any individual medal, she put up an impressive performance and remained part of the silver-winning Romanian team.

Moving forward, she won the silver medal as part of the Romanian team at the 25th ‘World Artistic Gymnastics Championships,’ held in Stuttgart, West Germany, from October 14, 1989, to October 22, 1989.

The promising career of this gifted gymnast came to an end after she suffered two major injuries and a growth spurt.

After her retirement from gymnastics, Aurelia created controversy when she posed nude for the September issue of ‘Playboy Netherlands’ in 1991. She also gave a critical interview to this American men's lifestyle and entertainment magazine and criticized the gymnastics program of Romania of the communist era.

She received an award during the centennial celebration of the ‘Romanian Gymnastics Federation’ in 2006. She was also recognized formally among Romanian gymnasts who had garnered a “perfect 10.”

Her achievements and contributions in the game led her to get inducted into the ‘International Gymnastics Hall of Fame,’ located in Oklahoma City, US, in May 2016.

She has garnered considerable popularity on social media, featuring in ‘YouTube’ videos edited and produced by her four sons. Her twins, Lucas and Marcus, who are better known as ‘The Dobre Twins,’ rose to fame on the now-defunct short-form video-hosting service ‘Vine.’ The two now post weekly videos on ‘YouTube,’ as ‘Vine’ has been shut down.

Aurelia features in many of the vlogs of ‘The Dobre Twins.’ She has gradually garnered more than a million followers on applications such as ‘musical.ly.’ Her videos are associated with gymnastics and illustrate the immense talent of this gifted gymnast who is now in her mid-forties.

Her Instagram account, ‘aurelia_dobre,’ where she posts eye-catching photographs, including those with her husband and four sons, has also garnered considerable popularity, amassing over 373,000 followers to date.

Personal Life

She relocated to the US in 1991 and married Boz Mofid, an Iranian gymnastics coach, the following year. The couple have four sons Cyrus (born 1993), Darius (born 1995), and twins Lucas and Marcus (born 1999).

Boz runs a gym named ‘Dobre Gymnastics Academy,’ in Maryland, where Aurelia works as a dance coach and choreographer.
