Childhood & Early Life

Garth Brook was born as the youngest child, born to Troyal Raymond Brooks, a draftsman and Colleen Carroll, a country musician, from the 1950s.

Since, his family, especially his mother was a music enthusiast; he learned to play guitar and banjo at an early age. Though he was more interested in sports, he used to sing at family functions.

He was good at football, baseball and athletics in high school and even earned a scholarship in track to Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, from where he graduated in 1984.

While at the University, he started singing at several clubs and bars around Oklahoma. His singing talent was discovered by entertainment counsel, Rod Phelps in 1985, who had come all the way from Dallas to listen to this young talent.

Impressed by his singing, Phelps offered Brooks to produce his first demo, for which he had to travel to Nashville for recording. However, he returned the same day to Oklahoma, but later, on the persuasion of Phelps, he went back to Nashville in 1987.

Career

In 1989, Brooks released his self-titled debut album, which went on to become a huge success. The album soon hit the US country album chart instantly and peaked at no. 13 on the Billboard 200. Particularly, the single ‘Much Too Young’ garnered great appreciation.

His second album ‘No Fences’ released in 1990, was also a major hit and occupied no. 1 spot on the Billboard country music chart for several weeks.

He released his third studio album ‘Ropin' the Wind’ on September 2, 1991, to rave reviews. The singles ‘Shameless’, ‘What She's Doing Now’, and ‘The River’ created a rage among the audiences and were constantly played at the country clubs.

On September 22, 1992, he released his fourth album ‘The Chase’ whose first single was the gospel-country-rock hybrid ‘We Shall Be Free’. The song was co-written by him during the race riots in Los Angeles.

The second song of the album, ‘Somewhere Other Than the Night’ was even more successful than the first and so was the third song ‘Learning to Live Again’, released in 1993. However, the last single ‘That Summer’, became his most successful single from the album.

On August 31, 1993, he released his fifth studio album ‘In Pieces’, which like his previous albums enjoyed critical success.

It was followed by ‘Fresh Horses’ in 1995, from which the song ‘She's Every Woman’ reached the top-10 in the Billboard Country Chart.

He released his seventh studio album ‘Sevens’ in 1997 and after a brief experiment in filmmaking and other projects, he announced his retirement in 2000.

On November 13, 2001, he released his last album ‘Scarecrow’. Unfortunately, it was not as successful as his previous albums; nevertheless, it was not a failure. After a long break, he announced his return to performance and recording in 2009.

His last performance, as of now, was in April 2013 at the 48th annual Academy of Country Music Awards.

Major Works
