John Deere TECH: Launch Your Career at SGTC

South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) offers a five-semester John Deere TECH Agricultural Technology program, in partnership with John Deere, which allows students to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in Agricultural Technology. During the program, students are sponsored by a John Deere dealer and spend time on campus and with the dealer to put their knowledge to work. The program prepares students for a career as a John Deere technician, partnering with John Deere agriculture and turf equipment dealers across the Southeastern portion of the United States. Students who graduate from the program bring John Deere certifications in electrical, hydraulic, and Service ADVISOR™ with them to the dealership. Instructors for the program at SGTC are Matthew Burks and Wayne Peck. Students enrolled in the Agricultural Technology program at SGTC train and become John Deere certified in electrical and hydraulic systems, as well as John Deere’s computer-based diagnostic tool, Service ADVISOR™.

South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) and John Deere recently hosted an Agricultural Technology Open House for approximately 75 high school students, parents, and dealers from across the Southeastern United States. The event took place in SGTC’s John Deere Ag Technology lab and classrooms, where John Deere officials and dealers invited prospective students and their parents, as well as high school guidance counselors and agriculture teachers from their service areas.

The Open House provided attendees with an opportunity to learn about the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Agricultural Technology program. John Deere officials from the corporate team and SGTC staff outlined the program, discussed admission procedures, and demonstrated what students would learn during the program.

SGTC President Dr. John Watford, Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs Paul Farr, and SGTC Academic Dean David Finley, along with John Deere officials, welcomed the attendees and students to the Open House. SGTC Vice President of Institutional Advancement Su Ann Bird discussed the SGTC Foundation, while SGTC Partnership Coordinator Tami Blount talked with parents and students about the overall process.

Attendees participated in different sessions covering topics such as financial aid, admission to the program, student life, and general information about the John Deere Ag Tech program. The Open House also included an open question-and-answer session and a luncheon.

SGTC’s students who are currently enrolled in the Agricultural Technology program provided demonstrations in the John Deere labs and classes to showcase the types of activities they are involved in learning on a day-to-day basis.

Also in attendance were SGTC John Deere Instructors Matthew Burks and Wayne Peck.

The Agricultural Technology Open House provided prospective students and their families an informative and hands-on experience to learn more about the program and opportunities available through SGTC and John Deere.

John Deere TECH Agricultural Technology Program at South Georgia Technical College

South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) offers a five-semester John Deere TECH Agricultural Technology program, which provides students with an opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in Agricultural Technology. Students are sponsored by a John Deere dealer to enroll in the program, where they spend eight weeks on campus in classrooms and labs and then work with a dealer for eight weeks to put their knowledge to work in a dealer setting. This pattern repeats during the program, which began its first class in August 2014.

The John Deere TECH partnership helps address the critical shortage of technicians in this field. Students graduate from the program with a detailed understanding of John Deere equipment and bring John Deere certifications in electrical, hydraulic, and Service ADVISOR™ with them to the dealership.

The program is designed to prepare students for a career as a John Deere technician, partnering with John Deere agriculture and turf equipment dealers across the Southeastern portion of the United States. Students enrolled in the Agricultural Technology program at SGTC train and become John Deere certified in electrical and hydraulic systems, as well as John Deere’s computer-based diagnostic tool, Service ADVISOR™.

Instructors for the program at SGTC are Matthew Burks and Wayne Peck, who utilize John Deere equipment, training components, and computer diagnostic tools to help students understand what makes equipment run. Students also spend time learning about engines, drivetrains, and product applications for a variety of agriculture and turf machinery.
