Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu is happily wedded to Maria Eladia Hagerman. who is a graphic designer and editor by profession. The couple have a son, Eliseo, and a daughter, Maria Eladia.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu was born on 15 August 1963, in Mexico City, to Hector Gonzalez Gama and Luz Maria Inarittu. He had six older siblings, and spent his growing up years in ‘Narvarte’, a middle-class district in Mexico City’s Southern section. His aversion to studies led to his ouster from school in his adolescence.
He embarked on a voyage, crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a freighter, and toured several countries in Africa and Europe . He did odd jobs to support himself, and later on in life, he capitalized on his experiences as a young voyager for creating films, some of which are considered as classics.
Alejandro came back to Mexico City following his global peregrinations, and completed his graduation from Universidad Iberoamericana with a major in communications.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu, after dropping out of school at the age of 16, took up employment as a seaman in a cargo ship to fund his continental trips as well as to finance his university education.
His first foray in the music and entertainment industry was as a DJ, initially working in the top shot nightclubs of Mexico City. In 1984, he was selected as a deejay in Mexico City’s FM radio station WFM. He excelled in mixing playlists of different genres that were lapped up by listeners.
Besides hosting programs as a DJ, Alejandro pioneered the trend of weaving riveting narratives around the playlists in order to keep the listeners hooked. His unique style of broadcasting was later on emulated by several radio broadcasters and DJs.
He also worked for a while with Latin America’s biggest and best known mass media conglomerate, Televisa, and earned acclaim by becoming the youngest producer to work for the firm since its inception. Starting from 1987 till 1989, he composed the musical score for six long-form Mexican films.
While working as a music producer, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu came in association with Guillermo Arriaga, a celebrated Mexican author and screenwriter. Alejandro began corresponding with Arriaga on a consistent basis, and their collaborative efforts led to the scripting of Alejandro’s debut full-length film, ‘Amores Perres’ that was released in 2000.
In a period of 10 years, starting from 2001 till 2011, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu directed a series of short films and innumerable TV commercials. Notable amongst the short movies include ‘Mexico’ that was completed in 2011. The film which ran for 11-minutes was a part of ‘11’-09”01—an anthology of short films.
In the year 2007, Alejandro directed’ ANNA’, a short film that was a segment of a compilation of French movies. The short movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. He directed a commercial for Nike, ‘Write the Future’ themed around football that bagged the Grand Prix in the Cannes Lions Advertising Festival.
