Wiesbaden to Hoover Street

Quincy Matthew Hanley was born on October 26, 1986, in Wiesbaden, Germany, where his father was stationed with the military. He grew up in South Central Los Angeles, mostly on Hoover Street, and the records he has made since are set there. He writes his stage name ScHoolboy Q, with a capital H, and that is how the Recording Academy, Billboard and Rolling Stone print it.

He has never pretended the two halves of that name fit together neatly. "I call myself All-American," he told NPR's Microphone Check in February 2014, in the week his first major-label album came out. He described that album, Oxymoron, as "a gangster rap L.A. dark album from a good student's point of view." Revolt, in a list of facts about him, adds that he played football as a wide receiver before rap.

Q Mac Mizzle and a Message on MySpace

Rapping came late and from an unlikely place. He told NPR that he spent two years working at a railroad before he was fired, and that he was recording under the name Q Mac Mizzle before he had settled on a rap name at all. The connection to Top Dawg Entertainment, the label that has carried his whole career, came through the producer Ali, who reached Punch at TDE through MySpace.

Revolt dates his signing to TDE to 2009. He gave Rolling Stone a looser version of the same year in 2024: 2009 was when he "got a good grip" on rapping. "I'm born in '86. I'm the typical rap fan," he said. Revolt also lists two mixtapes from that period, ScHoolboy Turned Hustla in 2008 and Gangsta & Soul in 2009.

Black Hippy and the Interscope Negotiations

At TDE he became one quarter of Black Hippy, the group of labelmates that also held Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul. His first two albums charted low and stayed there. Setbacks entered the Billboard 200 at No. 100 on the chart dated January 29, 2011, and Habits & Contradictions reached No. 111 a year later, in the chart dated January 28, 2012.

The step up came through a major label. In March 2012 SPIN reported that TDE was nearing a joint venture with Aftermath and Interscope. Under the terms SPIN described, Lamar's releases would come out jointly through both labels, while the other three Black Hippy members, Q among them, would be released by Top Dawg and Interscope. SPIN's word was "nearing": it reported a negotiation, not a signature, and the exact date the deal closed is not in any page opened for this article.

Oxymoron at No. 1 on the Billboard 200

Oxymoron came out in 2014 through TDE and Interscope and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on the chart dated March 15, 2014. For an artist whose previous peak was No. 100, the jump was the whole story of the TDE deal in one chart position.

The Recording Academy nominated the album for Best Rap Album at the 57th Grammy Awards and nominated "Studio," his single with BJ The Chicago Kid, for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. He had already sat through a ceremony the year before: as a featured artist on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's The Heist, he shared that record's Album of the Year nomination at the 56th Awards, for 2013.

Blank Face LP and the Fifth Nomination

Blank Face LP debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 on the chart dated July 30, 2016. It brought two more nominations at the 59th Grammy Awards, Best Rap Album for the record itself and Best Rap Performance for "That Part," the single with Kanye West. That made five nominations in three ceremonies. He has not won one, and the count has stayed at five and zero since.

CrasH Talk, Blue Lips and a Five-Year Gap

CrasH Talk debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 on the chart dated May 11, 2019. Then the releases stopped. Blue Lips, his sixth album, came out in March 2024, nearly five years after CrasH Talk, and debuted at No. 13 on the chart dated March 16, 2024, a figure Complex later confirmed. He was still on TDE, where Moosa Tiffith is now co-president.

The Rolling Stone interview that accompanied Blue Lips was as much about fatherhood as about the record. His daughters drifted in and out of the conversation.

A $10,000 Birdie Bet at Calabasas Country Club

Golf is the one hobby he talks about as much as music. FORE magazine told the origin story in a profile: a friend bet him $10,000 that he could not make a birdie within two years. He had never swung a club. The next morning he joined Calabasas Country Club, and he made the birdie in his second round, playing with borrowed clubs. By the time of the FORE profile his handicap was 13.4.

Thank Que and the Blank Face Anniversary Tour

On July 9, 2026, he posted to Instagram Stories that he was "wrapping up this 12-song album called Thank Que," adding, "I'm coming back." Complex reported the post two days later as the follow-up to Blue Lips. The same report noted that earlier in the year, on the Par 3 Podcast, he had talked about changes he made mainly for his daughters.

By October he was on the road marking ten years of Blank Face LP. At the Novo in Los Angeles on October 12, 2026, he told the crowd, "New album called THank Que coming out next year... I'mma be around for the 20th too. I promise that. I will never retire." No release date followed. The tour moved on to Phoenix, Oakland and Las Vegas. He turns 40 on October 26, 2026, with the anniversary dates still running and a seventh album promised for 2027.
