Rutherford Grammar School, Newcastle

The International Songwriters Association gives Bruce Welch's birthplace as Bognor Regis, Sussex, and his birth year as 1941. His working life starts further north. He grew up in Newcastle and met Hank Marvin while both were students at Rutherford Grammar School, according to Northumbria University. Marvin says the same in Tes: "I met Bruce Welch at school".

In April 1958 the two left Newcastle for London to enter a talent competition. They finished third and did not go home.

A Three-Week Contract With Cliff Richard

Six months later a place came up in Cliff Richard's band, the Drifters. Welch told Songwriter Magazine, published by the International Songwriters Association, how he got in:

"Hank got the job and said he would only join if I came with him. So in October '58 we were in the band, and what was supposed to be a three-week contract ended up thirty odd years."

The group backed Richard from October 1958 to July 1968. Northumbria University dates the formation of The Shadows to 1958, but Welch told Vintage Rock that the name first appeared on a record in the summer of 1959. That record was "Saturday Dance", and it came after three flops without Richard.

"Apache" at Abbey Road, June 1960

Two details come from Welch's account to Vintage Rock. Marvin combined Joe Brown's Meazzi echo box with the Stratocaster that Richard had imported in May 1959. And Jerry Lordan played "Apache" to the band on a ukulele, on a tour coach.

The Shadows recorded it at Abbey Road in June 1960, and it reached Number 1. Welch says it sold a million. The two interviews he gave disagree about how long it stayed on top: the Songwriter Magazine piece says six weeks, Vintage Rock says five consecutive weeks. The Scotsman lists four more Number 1 records for the band: "Wonderful Land", "Kon-Tiki", "Dance On" and "Foot Tapper".

The Company Welch Started in 1960

"Apache" was not the only thing that happened to Welch in 1960. He described the other to Songwriter Magazine:

"We started our own company in 1960, which was unheard of then, so a lot of the songs Cliff recorded and other people of course, we owned, so we've always done very well from the publishing side of things."

None of the reporting used for this article names the company, gives its partners or their shares, or records a sale, so Welch's own statement is the fullest account of the catalog here.

The songs behind it are listed in the association's introduction to the interview. For The Shadows, Welch co-wrote "F.B.I", "Foot Tapper", "The Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt", "Shindig" and "Theme For Young Lovers". For Richard, his credits include "Bachelor Boy", "On The Beach", "Please Don't Tease" and "Summer Holiday". He also co-wrote "Please Mr. Please" for Olivia Newton-John. He told The Scotsman in 2004: "I co-wrote Summer Holiday, Bachelor Boy, Please Don't Tease". He is less solemn about the best known of them:

"I always say "Summer Holiday" took twenty minutes to write and people say to me "Yes - it sounds like it!""

December 1968 and Marvin, Welch & Farrar

Welch explained his exit to Dan Biggane of Vintage Rock in August 2025: "But after those first 10 years I decided to step away from The Shadows in December 1968. I thought we'd done absolutely everything we could have possibly done."

The break lasted 18 months. He and Marvin then started a trio with John Farrar, Marvin, Welch & Farrar, which the association's profile places in 1970.

Producing Olivia Newton-John and "Miss You Nights"

Farrar was also his partner on the production side. Together they produced Newton-John, including "If Not For You". For Richard, Welch produced "I'm Nearly Famous", the album with "Miss You Nights" and "Devil Woman", and his production credits also take in "We Don't Talk Anymore". The association's introduction also names the Tarney Spencer Band, Roger Whittaker, Charlie Dore and Cilla Black among the artists he worked with.

Welch told The Scotsman that Richard sacked him as producer after three albums together.

Eurovision 1975 and "Cavatina"

Welch went through the band's later run with Vintage Rock. The Shadows represented the United Kingdom at Eurovision in 1975 with "Let Me Be The One" and came second. "20 Golden Greats" sold well over a million, he said, and "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" in 1978 and "Theme From The Deer Hunter (Cavatina)" in 1979 put them back in the Top 10.

A Fax From Hank Marvin and the 2004 Farewell Tour

The Scotsman dates the band's split to 1 December 1990 and attributes it to tensions within the group. Welch gave the paper his version in April 2004:

"Then Hank sent a fax saying he didn't have any more enthusiasm for The Shadows. I felt very hurt. People think we had a punch-up, we didn't. We just stopped speaking."

The occasion was a 37-date farewell tour that year, with Marvin and Brian Bennett. Also in 2004, Welch was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to music, according to the International Songwriters Association. His summary of his career, in the association's magazine: "A charmed life - a combination of songwriter, producer and artiste."
