The graduation ceremony, which took place at the Capitol’s auditorium, saw 17 new cadets graduate and the Governor thanked them for their service to the state, emphasizing their importance during times of disaster.

During the ceremony, Governor Abbott reminded the cadets that emergencies can arise in unexpected ways, and they must always keep the people they serve in mind. He shared a personal experience of needing help himself when a tree fell on him while jogging. The Governor expressed his gratitude to the cadets for being the first set of graduates from the academy and for their dedication to helping fellow Texans with speed, accuracy, professionalism, and compassion.

Joining the Governor at the ceremony were Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp, Chief Nim Kidd from the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), and other state and emergency management officials. The Texas Emergency Management Academy, which is a first-of-its-kind program in the nation operated by TDEM, offers comprehensive training to the next generation of emergency management workers. The program covers all phases of emergency management, including preparedness, response, recovery, and hazard mitigation.

Chief Kidd praised the academy’s innovative approach, stating that it would change emergency management not only in Texas but also across the nation. He expressed pride in the cadets for completing the rigorous eight-month course curriculum and looks forward to working with them as they embark on their new careers in emergency management and serve Texas communities.
