More than $11,000 has already been raised for Polar Plunge 2023 and nearly 100 people are expected to participate.
If you missed your chance to swim like penguins in Burrard Inlet at the beginning of 2023, you could soon be feeling like a polar bear and pouncing for charity.
Rocky Point Park Polar Plunge 2023 is scheduled for next Saturday (February 25).
Around 100 people are expected to descend on Port Moody’s Rocky Point Park to brave the cold while raising awareness of Special Olympians and their passion for competition for their communities.
The local event is in partnership with the Port Moody Police Department (PMPD) and the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics BC, who have set a fundraising goal of $12,500 this year.
“We’ve raised about $10,000 so far and we expect that number to grow,” PMPD spokesman Const said. Sam Zacharias told that Tri City News.
“Currently we have first responders from Tri-Cities and beyond, as well as SD43, Rotary and some local businesses that will also be attending.”
Zacharias added that this is one of PMPD’s community-based events being hosted compared to smaller versions in previous years.
Several Port Moody Special Olympians will be in attendance and recognized at the annual dive for their recent achievements at the 2023 BC Winter Games.
Speed skater Reid Demelo, alpine skier Fiona Hall and snowshoe hiker Jay Prentice represented the City of the Arts in Kamloops earlier this month.
Hall and Prentice won two medals at their respective events, including a gold medal each, while Demelo collected three silver medals on the rink.
Polar Plunge 2023 is scheduled for February 25 at 12pm at the Rocky Point Park Boat Launch.
Vancouver Canucks spokesman and Port Moody resident Al Murdoch was tapped to host the event.
Interested attendees who cannot make the Port Moody immersion are encouraged to sign up for a virtual version.
