Match Day 2023: Future Medical Professionals Matched

On Match Day, fourth-year medical students at the University of Cincinnati discover where they will complete their residencies. This year, 168 students participated in the event, which occurred at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Students open their envelopes at the same time or have their names called before taking the stage to learn their results. Spectrum News highlighted the experiences of two students, Halimat Olaniyan and Rachel Holloway, before and after they learned their match results. Olaniyan matched with Indiana University for pathology, while Holloway matched with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Medical Students Discover Residency Matches on Match Day

On Match Day, graduating medical students from the University of Cincinnati discover where they will complete their residencies. This annual event, held at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, is critical because it determines future physicians’ training locations, ranging from three-to-seven years.

168 fourth-year medical students were present at the event, with some students opening their envelopes simultaneously at 12:15 p.m. The rest waited until their names were randomly called before taking the stage to discover their match results, while spectators watch from the auditorium and via a livestream.

Spectrum News featured two students, Halimat Olaniyan and Rachel Holloway, before and after they learned of their matches. Olaniyan expressed her excitement to Spectrum News, stating that Match Day was the most thrilling day of medical school, and that she believed it was a more significant day than graduation. She matched with Indiana University to pursue pathology, while Holloway matched with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to pursue her residency.

Holloway stated that Match Day was a day she had long anticipated and that matching with such a great program was surreal. Overall, the University of Cincinnati Match Day event was a success, allowing students to continue their journeys in medical training with newfound certainty.
